Mit dem Hellfire Quick5 Interview versuchen wir für unsere Leser möglichst interessante Infos aus den Musikern rauszukitzeln, ohne dass sie sich seitenlangen Fragen/Antworten hingeben müssen. Wir vom Hellfire bemühen uns dabei, (mehr oder weniger) kurz und prägnant im Rahmen von 5 Fragen zu agieren (manchmal kann eine Frage auch gedoppelt oder getrippelt sein); den Musikern obliegt es, nach ihrem Gutdünken zu antworten: kurz und knapp bis hin zu ausschweifend und umfangreich.
Heute sprechen wir mit Alexey Markov, Mastermind des russischen Projektes Starsoup, dessen zweites Album “Castles Of Sand” am 20. November 2017 erscheinen wird.
HF: Die Lieder auf „Castles Of Sand“ sind sehr unterschiedlich. Es gibt progressive Stücke, einige erinnern eher an Folk Rock Songs und andere sind reine Instrumentalstücke. Und alle haben nichts mit der Art Musik gemein, die du mit Distant Sun machst. Dient Starsoup sozusagen als Heimat für die Bereiche deiner Kreativität, die nicht zum Stil von Distant Sun passen?
Alexey: Zum überwiegenden Teil, ja. Ich habe da allerdings auch eine gedankliche Trennlinie: Bei Distant Sun gibt es einfach keinen Platz für Piano (oder überhaupt ein Tasteninstrument) als zentrales Instrument. Wenn ich also aus irgendeinem Grund ein Tasteninstrument in meinem Song benötige, wird es höchstwahrscheinlich ein Song für Starsoup. Außerdem verwende ich bei Distant Sun kein Growling (im Death Metal Sinne), aber bei Starsoup tauchen gelegentlich Growls auf. Generell verwende ich bei Starsoup viel mehr verschiedene Stimmtechniken. Auch beim Komponieren und der Produktion gibt es Unterschiede. Bei Starsoup habe ich kein Problem damit, Stücke von anderen Leuten aufs Album zu nehmen und zu singen, wenn mir die Melodie gefällt. Auf dem neuen Album gibt es sogar Lieder, wo ich weder singe noch Gitarre spiele.
HF: Ich habe den Eindruck, dass Literatur, insbesondere epische Fantasy, eine nachhaltigen Wirkung auf deine Musik hat. Es gibt einen Song über Stephen Kings „Der dunkle Turm“-Saga (Your World Is Dead), ein weiterer ist durch „Der Herr der Ringe“ und „Der Hobbit“ beeinflusst (Winter In Shire) und korrigiere mich bitte, wenn ich falsch liege, aber ich denke „The Catcher In The Lie“ ist ein Wortspiel mit J.D. Salingers „The Catcher In The Rye“ (Anm.d.Red.: deutscher Titel „Der Fänger im Roggen“). Wie groß ist der Einfluss von Literatur auf deine Arbeit und wie wichtig ist sie in deinem täglichen Leben?
Alexey: Mit deinen Vermutungen liegst du komplett richtig. “Brother’s Plea” beschäftigt sich zudem mit der Bibel und “Castle” – naheliegend – mit Kafkas “The Castle” (Anm.d.Red.:deutscher Titel „Das Schloss“). Früher habe ich viel gelesen und schreibe auch selber. Ich habe sogar ein Buch veröffentlicht, eine Abhandlung über Finanzmärkte für Metalheads und Country Punks. Eigentlich möchte ich irgendwann auch etwas im Bereich Fantasy oder Sci-Fi veröffentlichten. Und natürlich wird es auch in Zukunft weiterhin Lieder geben, die auf Literatur basieren.
HF: Auf dem ersten Album „Bazaar Of Wonders“ gibt es ein Stück, eine Ballade, namens „Rumors Of Better Life“. Und das neue Album enthält einen Song mit dem Titel „Rumors Of Better Love“, ebenfalls eine wunderschöne Ballade. Reiner Zufall oder ist dies als eine Art Fortsetzung gedacht?
Alexey: Schön dass es dir aufgefallen ist. Es ist sogar jedes Mal Lied 5 auf der Trackliste. Beide sind im Singer-Songwriter-Stil geschrieben und handeln von Emotionen und verletzten Gefühlen. Als ich „Rumors Of Better Love“ komponiert habe, wusste ich sofort, dass es dem Stil des vorherigen Albums entspricht, daher habe ich den Text mit diesem Eindruck im Hinterkopf verfasst (die Musik war zuerst entstanden).
HF: Was mich auch sehr beeindruckt hat, ist der Umstand, dass jeder Song des Albums eine eigene bildliche Umsetzung erhalten hat. Ich habe die Bilder gesehen, sie sind großartig und passen perfekt zum jeweiligen Song. Wer hatte diese Idee und wie schwierig war es, dieses Vorhaben in die Realität umzusetzen?
Alexey: Das war ehrlich gesagt gar nicht meine Idee. Dmitry, mein Bandkollege bei Garage Dayz, hat eine eigene Band namens Tantal und sie haben ebenfalls für jeden Track ihres aktuellen Albums ein eigenes Bild kreiert. Ich habe bei dieser Idee sofort angebissen, denn dies war genau das, was ich wollte – der Musik ein zusätzliches Abbild zu geben, sozusagen meiner Musik eine weitere Dimension hinzuzufügen. Meine Ideen habe ich mit dem großartigen Alex von Mayhem Design besprochen und ihm angeboten, dass er das Artwork für jeden Song kreieren könne. Ich glaube, ich habe für neun der zwölf Cover das Konzept beigesteuert und drei hat er komplett alleine entwickelt, basierend auf meinen Ideen.
HF: Besteht die Möglichkeit, dass Starsoup eines Tages auch außerhalb des Studios als Band existieren wird und wir euch dann auch live auf der Bühne erleben können?
Alexey: Es gäbe zwei Möglichkeiten, dies umzusetzen. Entweder als Akustik-Set mit Playback (ich alleine auf Tour – praktisch, günstig, realistisch), oder ich engagiere eine komplette Band (was eine viel komplexere Aufgabe wäre, insbesondere da es schwierig ist, die Songs live entsprechend zu spielen – und gleichzeitig noch zu singen). Aber zuerst möchte ich sicher sein, dass wir ein entsprechend großes Publikum anziehen können – und dafür muss ich erst einmal weiter gute Songs schreiben und Videos drehen und viel Promo machen. Es wird also irgendwann soweit sein, aber ich kann noch nicht sagen, wann genau.

Hellfire Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.
Today we talk to Alexey Markov, mastermind of Starsoup from Russia who will release their second album „Castles Of Sand“ on Nov 20th 2017.
HF: The songs on „Castles Of Sand“ are very different from each other. There are progressive ones, some resemble folk rock songs and others are instrumentals. And all of them differ from the kind of music that you make with Distant Sun. Is Starsoup your way of choice to give a home to those parts of your creativity that don’t fit in with the style of Distant Sun?
Alexey: Most of the time, yes. But I also have a dividing line in my mind: there won’t be a place for a piano (or any keyboards) as a main instrument in Distant Sun. So if I need a piano in my song for any reason, it’ll most probably be a Starsoup song. Also, I don’t use growling (in the death metal sense) in Distant Sun, but there are occasional growls in Starsoup. Overall, I use many more vocal techniques in Starsoup. Another thing is composing and production – I’m okay with other people’s songs in Starsoup – if I like the melody, I can take it in the album and sing it, and on this album there are songs where I don’t even sing or play the guitar.
HF: Seems to me that literature has a lasting effect on your music, especially epic fantasy. There is a song about Stephen Kings „The Dark Tower“ Saga (Your World Is Dead), another one is influenced by „The Lord of the Rings“ and „The Hobbit“ (Winter In Shire) and correct me if I’m wrong but I think „The Catcher In The Lie“ is a play on words with J.D. Salingers „The Catcher In The Rye“. How much of an influence does literature have on your work and how important is it in your everyday life?
Alexey: All of your guesses are right! Also, Brother’s Plea has to do with the Bible and Castle – with Kafka’s „the Castle“. I used to read a lot. I also write. I have a published book even – it’s a Financial Markets course for metalheads and country punks. Plan to switch to fantasy or sci-fi some day. And of course there will be more literature-oriented songs in the future!
HF: On your first album „Bazaar Of Wonders“ there is a song, a ballad, called „Rumors Of Better Life“. And the new album contains a song named „Rumors Of Better Love“, again a beautiful ballad. Just a coincidence or is this meant as a kind of sequel?
Alexey: Yeah, glad you noticed. They are both number 5 on the tracklist, too. They are both in the singer-songwriter style and about emotions and hard feelings. When I wrote „Rumors of Better Love“, I instantly knew that there’s something it in in the style of the previous album, so I wrote the lyrics already with that in mind (the music was written first).
HF: Another thing that impressed me a lot is that every song on the album got his own artwork. I’ve seen the pictures and they look terrific and fit the respective song perfectly. Who came up with this idea and how difficult was it to put this into effect?
Alexey: This wasn’t my idea in fact. My GARAGE DAYZ bandmate Dmitry has a band of his own, called TANTAL, and they produced a picture for every track too for their recent album. I was hooked with this idea, cause it’s what I wanted – to give an additional image, add another dimension to my music. I shared my ideas with this wonderful guy Alex of Mayhem Design, and offered him to draw every song art. I think I proposed a concept for 9 out of 12 covers and he came up with three on his own based on my ideas.
HF:Is there a chance that one day Starsoup will become a band outside the studio and that we will see you live on stage?
Alexey: This may happen two ways: either an acoustic set with a playback (me touring alone – practical, cheap, realistic), or me hiring a full band (which is a much more difficult task, especially because the songs are pretty hard to play properly – and sing at the same time). But first I want to be sure that we’ll get a good crowd – and for this I need to write more good songs and shoot videos and do a lot of promo. So it might happen eventually, but I don’t know when.
