Bei Musik neige ich ja öfters mal dazu, einfach eine Wundertüte zu kaufen. Wenn überhaupt, kenn ich ein einziges Lied einer Band, aber das war dann auch so gut, dass ich direkt das ganze Album für ein Review vereinnahmt habe. So auch bei der tschechischen Band Sunset Trail. Zufällig war ich auf ihre Single “Never Apart” gestoßen, die mich mit ihrer ganz speziellen Stilistik sofort angesprochen hat. Und wer so ein Lied schreiben kann, wird garantiert ansonsten nicht nur Füllware auf ein Album packen. Meine Hoffnung wurde erfüllt.
Schon vor acht Jahren gaben Sunset Trail mit der Veröffentlichung ihrer EP “St.Mistress” ein erstes Lebenszeichen von sich. Und sind seitdem nicht mehr von den Bühnen wegzudenken. 2012 folgte das erste Album “Revealing” und nach zwei Single-Veröffentlichungen schließlich 2016 die EP “Serpents”. Dass sie damit 2016 als Support für Caliban in Russland unterwegs waren, deutet schon an, dass Sunset Trail klanglich eher Richtung Härte tendieren. Im Folgejahr präsentierten sich die Tschechen dann auch auf den Bühnen des Vereinigten Königreiches, bevor die Band daran ging, ihr zweites Album zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. Mit dem Wissen der erfahrenen Musiker, dass man nichts erzwingen kann, spiegeln die zwölf Songs auf “Reflections” eben genau das wieder – Reflektionen über das Leben und das, was um uns herum geschieht. Herausgekommen sind thematisch sehr vielschichtige Songs, die ihren unterschiedlichen Charakter auch in der klanglichen Umsetzung wiederspiegeln.
Der Sound von Sunset Trail wird dabei maßgeblich durch den Gesang geprägt, der stimmlich jenseits der generischen Standardwerte agiert. Cleane und gutturale Gesangsparts weisen eine erfreuliche Schnittmenge an charaktergebenden Ecken und Kanten auf, wodurch die Gegensätze in sich stimmig klingen und fließend agieren können. Auch instrumental fließen Melodie und rhythmische Härte ständig ineinander. Die hieraus entstehenden musikalische Grundlage dürfte nicht nur Fans von Bands wie Stick To Your Guns ansprechen. Sunset Trail verbinden Metalcore mit Elementen aus NuMetal und modernem Alternative Metal.
“Never Apart” erhält seinen besonderen Reiz zum Beispiel durch eine Songstruktur, die wenig Metalcore, aber viel modernen Alternative enthält. In Deutschland würden mir da als Referenzwert die härteren Songs von Emil Bulls einfallen. Melodiebetont, ohne Breakdowns, aber trotzdem druckvoll und intensiv und geprägt durch die Gegensätze im Stil der Vocals. “Reflections” erinnert streckenweise an ältere Linkin Park Songs, mit rap-artigen Strophen und einem gefühlsintensiven, clean gesungenen Chorus. “Worlds Astray” ist von der Struktur her einer der am klassischten geprägten Songs auf “Reflections”. Cleane Parts und ein hoher Anteil an gutturalem Gesang, dazu Rhythmus-Dominanz im Wechselspiel mit Melodien.
Wer Metalcore abseits der Standards mag, sollte das neue Album von Sunset Trail antesten. Es erreichen zwar nicht alle Songs das hohe Niveau von “Never Apart”, “Echoes” und “Reflections”, meine absoluten Anspieltipps, aber Enttäuschungen gibt es hier keine. Eine interessante Scheibe, die vom Potential dieser Band zeugt.

When it comes to music, I often tend to just buy a grab bag. If at all, I know a single song of a band, but that’s so good that I take the whole album directly for a review. This was also the case with the Czech band Sunset Trail. By chance I came across their single “Never Apart”, which immediately appealed to me with its very special style. And if you can write such a song, you are guaranteed to put more than just filling material on an album. My hope was fulfilled.
Already eight years ago Sunset Trail gave a first sign of life with the release of their EP “St.Mistress”. And have been an integral part of the stages ever since. In 2012 followed the first album “Revealing” and after two single releases finally in 2016 the EP “Serpents”. That they were on the road in Russia in 2016 as support for Caliban already indicates that the sound of Sunset Trail tends towards hardness. The following year the Czechs presented themselves on the stages of the United Kingdom before the band started writing and recording their second album. With the knowledge of the experienced musicians that nothing can be forced, the twelve songs on “Reflections” are just that – reflections on life and what is happening around us. The result are thematically very complex songs, which reflect their different character also in the musical realization.
The sound of Sunset Trail is decisively influenced by the vocals, which act beyond the generic standard values. Clean and guttural vocal parts have a pleasing intersection of characterising edges, which allows the contrasts to sound harmonious and act fluently. Even instrumentally, melody and rhythmic hardness constantly flow into each other. The resulting musical foundation should not only appeal to fans of bands like Stick To Your Guns. Sunset Trail combine Metalcore with elements of NuMetal and modern Alternative Metal.
“Never Apart” gets its special charm for example from a song structure that contains little Metalcore, but a lot of modern Alternative. In Germany I would think of some of the harder songs by Emil Bulls as a reference. Melodic, without breakdowns, but nevertheless powerful and intense and marked by the contrasts in the style of the vocals. “Reflections” is reminiscent of older Linkin Park songs, with rap-like verses and an emotionally intense, cleanly sung chorus. “Worlds Astray” is one of the most classical songs on “Reflections”. Clean parts and a high proportion of guttural singing, plus rhythm-dominance in interplay with melodies.
If you like Metalcore off the beaten tracks, you should try the new album from Sunset Trail. Not all songs reach the high level of “Never Apart”, “Echoes” and “Reflections”, my absolute favourites, but there are no disappointments here. An interesting album, which is testemony to the potential of this band.
