Pünktlich zum Release ihres Debütalbums “Flat Earth Rider“ am 6. August konnten wir mit SUNCRAFTs Gitarrist Sigurd Grøtan ein Quick 5-Interview führen. Neben den musikalischen Einflüssen der Band ging es auch darum, wie sich Verschwörungstheorien auf das Songwriting der Newcomer aus Norwegen ausgewirkt haben.

HF: Wenn man euer beeindruckendes Debütalbum anhört, bekommt man den Eindruck, dass ihr schon eine Weile zusammen spielt. Wann habt ihr angefangen, in dieser Konstellation zusammen Musik zu machen?
Sigurd: Wir haben Ende 2017 angefangen, zusammen zu spielen und haben vom ersten Tag an zusammen Musik geschrieben. Die meiste Zeit haben wir unsere Songs in der Gruppe zusammen fertiggestellt, weswegen wir allmählich sehr gut darin geworden sind, Meinungsverschiedenheiten ohne größere Reibereien auszutragen.
HF: Ihr kombiniert viele Genres. Der Hard Rock ist relativ dominant, aber man findet auch Spuren von Stoner Rock, Doom, Hardcore und sogar Pop. Welche Bands haben euch beeinflusst?
Sigurd: Besonders was den Sound betrifft, würde ich sagen, dass wir stark von großartigen Stoner Rock Bands wie Fu Manchu, Elder oder Queens of the Stoneage beeinflusst wurden. Wir stehen einfach auf diesen Sound – laut, fuzzy und heavy. Abgesehen davon versuchen wir uns bei vielen Bands Inspiration zu holen. Ein paar, die mir direkt einfallen sind King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Deafheaven, Thee Oh Sees und Mastodon. Norwegische Bands wie Kvelertak, Motorpsycho und Thulsa Doom waren für uns auch wichtige Einflüsse. Ebenso wie ABBA.
HF: Welche Rolle haben Verschwörungstheorien in eurem Songwriting-Prozess gespielt?
Sigurd: Das ist offensichtlich die größte Motivation in der Band. Naja, nicht ganz, aber unser Sänger und Texter Rasmus hat für seine Bachelorarbeit einige Flat-Earther interviewt und war gelinde gesagt fasziniert von diesen Leuten. Also ja, der Versuch, zu verstehen, wie Menschen von Verschwörungstheorien angezogen werden, hat definitiv Einfluss auf die Lyrics gehabt.

HF: Ihr scheint gerade erfolgreich eine kreative Welle zu reiten. Was sind die Pläne für die Zukunft? Ist das zweite Album schon in der Mache? Habt ihr Gigs gebucht?
Sigurd: Der Plan ist, weiterzumachen! Wir haben ein paar neue Songs in Arbeit, aber ich würde nicht so weit gehen, zu sagen, dass das zweite Album schon unterwegs ist. Wir arbeiten dran, aber das dürfte noch eine Weile dauern. Aber wer weiß? Vielleicht veröffentlichen wir bis dahin ein paar Singles. Wir haben ein paar Gigs in Norwegen geplant, aber die Pandemie erschwert die Planung sehr. Aber das Ziel ist, so viele Liveshows wie möglich zu spielen.
HF: Gibt es sonst noch etwas, das unsere Leser über euer Album wissen sollten?
Sigurd: Das Album wurde fast ausschließlich live aufgenommen, abgesehen vom Gesang sowie ein paar Extraspuren und Layerings. Eines der Gitarrensoli wurde mit einem Bass aufgenommen. Und es gibt auf dem gesamten Album nicht einen einzigen Cowbell-Beat.

“Conspiracy theories were a big motivation for us” – Quick 5 interview with Suncraft guitarist Sigurd
Just in time for the release of their debut album “Flat Earth Rider“ on August 6th, we had the chance to sit down with SUNCRAFTs guitar player Sigurd Grøtan for a Quick 5 interview. Apart from the musical influences of the band, we also talked about how conspiracy theories influenced the songwriting of the Norwegian newcomers.

HF: Listening to your impressive debut, it seems you guys have been playing together for some time already. When did you start making music together in that constellation?
Sigurd: We started playing together in late 2017, writing music from day one. Most of the time we craft our songs together as a group, which means that over time we have gotten pretty good at arguing smoothly.
HF: You are combining many genres. The Hard Rock is definitely dominating but there clearly are traces of Stoner Rock, Doom, Hardcore and even Pop. What bands are you influenced by?
Sigurd: Especially sound-wise I would say we are hugely influenced by some great bands in Stoner Rock, such as Fu Manchu, Elder and Queens of the Stone Age. We really enjoy that loud, fuzzed, and heavy sound. Other than that, we look to a variety of bands for inspiration. A few that come to mind are King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Deafheaven, Thee Oh Sees, and Mastodon. HF: What role did conspiracy theories play in the songwriting process?
Sigurd: This is obviously the biggest motivator in the band. Well, not really, but our vocalist and lyricist Rasmus researched and interviewed some flat-earthers as a part of his bachelor thesis and he was fascinated by these guys to say the least. So yeah, attempting to understand how people are drawn to conspiracy theories is definitely something that has found its way into some of the lyrics.
HF: As you seem to be successfully riding a creative wave, what are your plans for the future? Is album number two already in the making? Do you have gigs booked?
Sigurd: The plan is to keep on going! There are a couple of new songs in the works, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying the second album is on its way. We are working towards it, but it might take a little while. But who knows, a couple of singles might show up in the meantime? We have a few gigs coming up here in Norway, but this pandemic situation makes planning these things very difficult. Still, the goal is to play as many live shows as we can!
HF: What do you want our readers to know about you that isn’t covered by one of the questions above?
Sigurd: The album is pretty much recorded live, apart from vocals, leads, and some extra layering. One of the guitar solos is recorded using a bass. Also, there is not a single cowbell beat on the entire album.
