Mit dem Hellfire Quick5 Interview versuchen wir für unsere Leser möglichst interessante Infos aus den Musikern rauszukitzeln, ohne dass sie sich seitenlangen Fragen/Antworten hingeben müssen. Wir vom Hellfire bemühen uns dabei, (mehr oder weniger) kurz und prägnant im Rahmen von 5 Fragen zu agieren (manchmal kann eine Frage auch gedoppelt oder getrippelt sein); den Musikern obliegt es, nach ihrem Gutdünken zu antworten: kurz und knapp bis hin zu ausschweifend und umfangreich.
Diesmal sprachen wir mit Steve, Gitarrist von In Other Climes aus Frankreich, die am 07. Juni 2019 ihr neues Album „Ruthless“ veröffentlichen.
HF: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu eurem neuen Album. Im Vergleich zu euren anderen Releases hat es ja ein eher minimalistisches Cover Artwork und die Songtitel bestehen fast immer aus nur einem Wort, die meisten mit einem mehr oder weniger aggressiven Unterton. Purer Zufall oder steckt da eine Botschaft hinter?
Steve: Hi, ja, das Artwork zu “Ruthless” ist schlichter als das, was wir in der Vergangenheit hatten, und genauso wollten wir es haben, denn es passt perfekt zur Stimmung der Songs, es ist brutal, aggressiv und voll auf die Fresse. Wir wollten einfach dieses Rohe zurück in unsere Songs bringen, so wie es war, als wir mit der Band angefangen haben. Auf eine gewisse Weise ist dieses Album all den Bands gewidmet, die uns inspiriert haben und in uns das Verlangen geweckt haben, diese Art von Musik zu spielen.
Das “R”-Bild, das wir auf Social Media gepostet haben, ist nur das Slipcase Cover, das Artwork ist daher nicht so minimalistisch wie du denkst und es gibt eine Thematik, die mit dem richtigen Cover in Verbindung steht. Wie gesagt, es ist ein neues Album, deshalb umgibt es auch eine ganz neue Atmosphäre, so wie es bei all unseren vorherigen Releases auch war. Wir haben das “R” wegen seiner Schlichtheit gewählt und die Promo und der Merch werden mit diesem Design zu tun haben.
HF: Korrigier mich bitte, wenn ich falsch liege, aber auch wenn ich keine Infos dazu gefunden habe, so macht es den Eindruck, als hättet ihr ein paar Gäste auf “Ruthless”, z.B. bei den Songs “Bark” und “MWMW”, oder zu wem gehören die zusätzlichen Vocals?
Steve: Es gibt nur ein Feature auf dem Song “Bark”. Wir baten Romain von Real Deal, der auch als Ex-Mitglied von Nine Eleven bekannt ist, auf unserem Album zu singen und er hat den Job ziemlich gut gemacht, es ist einer unserer Lieblings-Songs. Die ursprüngliche Idee war, mehrere Features mit engen Freunden zu machen, aber mit diesem Album wollten wir ein richtiges Comeback hinlegen, da ist es irgendwie logischer, dass Ganze persönlicher zu gestalten. Wir haben schon viele Ideen für zukünftige Veröffentlichungen, von daher werden wir es dann wohl irgendwann in der Zukunft mal so machen.
HF: Ihr habt ja schon einige Alben, EPs, Splits etc. veröffentlicht. Mit all diesen Songs in eurer Geschichte, welcher davon bedeutet dir am meisten und warum? Und gibt es einen Song, den du heutzutage anders machen würdest?
Steve: Ich würde sagen “This is your time” oder “Live.Love.Learn.Lead.Leave” von “Empty Bottles & Wasted Nights”, denn dieses Album und speziell diese Songs haben uns quasi aufs nächste Level gebracht und haben uns die Möglichkeit eröffnet, durch so viele Länder zu touren. Immer wenn wir diese Lieder spielen, bricht Chaos im Pit aus. Wahrscheinlich liegt es daran, dass es das erste Album war, welches wir mit Michael als Sänger aufgenommen haben, die Atmosphäre um die Band war total entspannt und wir wollten einfach alles viel ernsthafter angehen, die Musik, Touren…einfach alles. Als wir das Album geschrieben haben, wussten wir, dass hier gerade etwas Besonderes passiert. Genau wie jetzt beim “Ruthless” Album war es schwierig und hat viel Zeit in Anspruch genommen, aber wir wussten einfach, dass wir da was stabiles gebaut haben. Im Hinblick auf das neue Album würde ich sagen, der Titelsong “Ruthless”, denn das ist der perfekte Song, um eine Show zu eröffnen.
Ein Song, den wir anders machen könnten/würden? Ich würde sagen, alle irgendwie 🙂 Es gibt immer Möglichkeiten, es besser zu machen, und das ist genau das, was wir live machen. Wir fügen den Live Songs immer kleine Änderungen hinzu.
HF: Auch wenn man den Eindruck hat, In Other Climes wären schon überall auf der Welt gewesen, gibt es immer noch Länder oder Locations, wo ihr unbedingt mal eine Show spielen wollt? Was war bisher die beeindruckendste Erfahrung auf Tour?
Steve: Jede Tour ist eine neue Erfahrung, ganz besonders, wenn du vorher noch nie in dem Land gespielt hast. Es ist also echt schwer, diese Frage zu beantworten, aber ich würde sagen, Japan, denn es war eine absolut coole und lustige Tour. Dieses Land ist so anders als alle anderen, das ist schon surreal.
Inzwischen konzentrieren wir uns mehr darauf, in verrückten und ausgefallenen Ländern zu spielen, wo die meisten anderen Bands niemals hinkommen. Ich denke da z.B. an Länder wie Kenja, Kuba…solche Länder, wo wir auch schon gespielt haben.
Um auf die erste Frage zurückzukommen, wo wir gerne mal spielen würden…da würde ich sagen, einfach da, wo uns das Leben so hintreibt 🙂 …Nein, mal ernsthaft, da gibt es eigentlich keine Einschränkungen, also wenn wir die Möglichkeit bekämen, in Island, Israel oder den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten zu spielen, dann würden wir es tun. Wenn man solche Länder besucht, dann lernt und sieht man viele Dinge und man wird toleranter, also warum nicht? So viele Leute verzichten auf wertvolle Momente in ihrem Leben weil sie Angst haben. Sie müssten sich einfach nur voran bewegen.
HF: Was steht bei euch bis zum Release von “Ruthless” noch auf dem Plan und was kommt nach dem 07. Juni? Gibt es Pläne für eine Release Tour?
Steve: Bei uns steht eine Russland Tour an und eine Show in Süd-Frankreich, alles noch vorm Album-Release, danach spielen wir im Sommer einige europäische Festivals und wie wir vor ein paar Wochen schon angekündigt haben, werden wir dann eine Welt-Tournee machen, um unser Album zu promoten. Der Gedanke dahinter ist, im Laufe von zwei Jahren das zu machen, was wir schon die letzten sechs Jahre gemacht haben: sowohl in Ländern zu spielen, die wir schon kennen als auch in Ländern, wo wir noch niemals waren.

Hellfire Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.
Today we talk to Steve, guitarist of In Other Climes from France who will release their new album „Ruthless“ June 7, 2019.
HF: Congratulations on your new album. Compared to your other releases it has quite a minimalistic cover artwork and the song titles are mostly one word, most of them with a more or less aggressive tone to them. Just coincidence or is there are message oder meaning behind it?
Steve: Hi, yes the artwork of „Ruthless“ is simplier than what we did in the past and it’s exactly what we wanted cause it fits perfectly with the spirit of the songs, it’s violent, aggressive, and in your face. We really wanted to bring back brutality into the new songs like it was the case when we started the band. In a sense, this album is dedicated to all the bands which inspired us and gave us the desire to play this kind of music.
The „R“ picture we’ve posted on social medias is just the slipcase cover, so artwork is not as minimalistic as you think and there’s a theme related to the real cover. Once again it’s a new album, so there’s a new atmosphere around it like we did on all our previous releases. We chose the „R“ as slipcase cause it’s simple and all the merch and promotion will be related to this design.
HF: Correct me if I’m wrong, but even though I didn’t find any information about it, you seem to have some guests on „Ruthless“, e.g. on the songs „Bark“ and „MWMW“, or whose’s are the extra vocals?
Steve: There’s only one featuring on the song called „Bark“. We asked to Romain from „Real Deal“ also known as an ex member of „Nine Eleven“ to sing on the new album and he did a pretty nice job, it’s one of our favorite songs. First idea was to make several featurings with only close friends, but with this album we wanted to make a real come back and in a sense it’s more logical to make something more personal. We already have a lot of ideas for the upcoming releases, so we’ll probably do it in the future.
HF: You have already released a couple of albums, EP, Splits etc. With all this songs in your history, which one means the most to you and why? And is there a song that nowadays you would do in a different way?
Steve: I would say „This is your time“ or „Live.Love.Learn.Lead.Leave“ from „Empty Bottles & Wasted Nights“ cause this album, and especially these songs, brought us to the next level and gave us the opportunity to tour in so many countries. Each time we play these songs it’s chaos in the pit. This is probably due to the fact that it was the first album we recorded with Michael (singer), the atmosphere around the band was really cool and we really wanted to make things more seriously, the music, tours … everything. When we were writing it, we knew that something special was happening. Just like „Ruthless“ album, it was difficult and it took so much time to release but we knew we had something solid. As far as the new album is concerned, I would say „Ruthless“ cause it’s the perfect song to start a show.
A song we could do in a different way? I would say all of them 🙂 There’s always a way to do it better and it’s exactly what we’re doing in live, we always add changes to the live songs.
HF: Even though In Other Climes seems to have been around the world already, are there still countries or venues you dream of playing a show at? What has been the most impressive experience on tour so far?
Steve: Each tour is a new experience, especially when you’ve never played in the country before, so it’s hard to answer this question but I would say Japan cause it was a really cool and funny tour. This country is so different from everything else, it’s surreal. Now, we’re more focused on playing in crazy and catchy countries where most of the bands don’t play. I’m thinking about Kenya, Cuba … these kind of countries we played in.
To answer the first question about the place we would love to play in, I would say where life brings us 🙂 No seriously, there’s no limit, so if we had the opportunity to play for example in Iceland, Israel, United Arab Emirates … we’ll do it. When you visit these countries, you learn and see a lot of things, and it makes you more tolerant, so why not do it ? So many people lose precious moments in their lives just because they’re afraid. They have to move forward.
HF: What’s on your agenda until the release of „Ruthless“ and what comes after June 7? Are there any plans on a release tour?
Steve: We have a Russian tour coming and a show in south of France before the release date of the album, then we’ll play the European summer festivals and like we announced it a few weeks ago, we’ll do a world tour for the promotion of the album. The idea is to make in 2 years what we did for the past 6 years, playing in both known countries and new ones we never played in before.
