Mit dem Hellfire Quick5 Interview versuchen wir für unsere Leser möglichst interessante Infos aus den Musikern rauszukitzeln, ohne dass sie sich seitenlangen Fragen/Antworten hingeben müssen. Wir vom Hellfire bemühen uns dabei, (mehr oder weniger) kurz und prägnant im Rahmen von 5 Fragen zu agieren (manchmal kann eine Frage auch gedoppelt oder getrippelt sein); den Musikern obliegt es, nach ihrem Gutdünken zu antworten: kurz und knapp bis hin zu ausschweifend und umfangreich.
Diesmal sprachen wir mit Dan Watson, Sänger von Enterprise Earth, die am 05. April 2019 ihr neues Album “Luciferous” veröffentlichen.
HF: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu eurem neuen Album. Es hat ja einiges an Überraschungen zu bieten. Dinge, die zumindest ich nicht von Enterprise Earth erwartet hätte, wie eher zerbrechlich wirkende akustische Momente, mehr Raum für melodische Parts im allgemeinen und sogar ein paar Clean Vocals bei “There Is No Tomorrow”. Ist das eine Entwicklung, die ganz von selbst entstand oder war es mehr eine bewusste Entscheidung etwas Neues zu probieren?
Dan: Das war ein ganz natürlicher Prozess, der durch das Hinzukommen unseres neuen Gitarristen Gabe Mangold entstand. Er hat seinen eigenen Stil und seine eigene Dynamik mitgebracht, die BJ’s klassischen EE Stil ergänzen. Durch diese neuen Klänge hatte ich dann die Möglichkeit, Gesangsstile anzuwenden, die ich auf vergangenem EE-Material nicht wirklich einsetzen konnte. Ich schreibe Vocals, die einen Song begleiten sollen und mit ihm zusammenarbeiten. Für uns geht es darum, großartige Songs zu erschaffen. Die Cleans bei “There Is No Tomorrow” sind übrigens tatsächlich von Gabe.
HF: Nachdem ja die beiden bisher veröffentlichten Singles noch nicht viel von diesen neuen Facetten in eurem Sound verraten haben, werdet ihr diese euren Fans noch mit einem Song vorstellen bevor das Album kommt? Welche Reaktionen erwartet ihr? Und wo wir gerad schon von Singles reden, warum ist “Only Hell Will Embrace The Damned” nicht auf dem Album?
Dan: Ja, die nächste Single, die wir veröffentlichen, wird ein bisschen von unserem neuen Sound präsentieren. Zuerst wollten wir unseren aktuellen Fans genau das geben, was sie von uns erwarten. Eine Weiterentwicklung, die sich an unserem klassischen Stil orientiert. Mit unserer letzten Single wollen wir ihnen einen Vorgeschmack auf die Überraschungen geben, die wir mit der Veröffentlichung des neuen Albums in petto haben. Unsere Fans sind sehr wichtig für uns und wir haben sie auch im Hinterkopf, wenn wir an Material arbeiten, aber letztendlich ist doch noch wichtiger, wie wir in Bezug auf unsere Musik empfinden und bei “Luciferous” haben wir das Gefühl, dass wir unser bestes Album bisher geschrieben haben. Wir könnten nicht glücklicher sein mit dem, was wir erschaffen haben. “Only Hell Will Embrace The Damned” war eine Single, mit der wir das neue Line-up und die neue Richtung, in die wir uns stilistisch bewegen wollten, vorgestellt haben. Wir hatten sie gar nicht im Sinn, als wir das neue Album geschrieben haben, also haben wir beschlossen, sie als Stand alone-Single zu belassen.
HF: Obwohl Enterprise Earth ja erst ein paar Jahre existiert, musstet ihr schon mit einer Reihe von Besetzungswechseln klarkommen. Das hat euch offensichtlich nicht aufhalten können, aber in welchen anderen Aspekten hat es sich auf die Band ausgewirkt?
Dan: Wir haben viele Wechsel durchmachen müssen und für mich hatte es was von Partnersuche. Man datet solange rum, bis man den Richtigen/die Richtige gefunden hat, um einen Familie zu gründen. Der Weg ist ganz schön hart und wenn du in einer Band bist, musst du auch gemeinsam harte Entscheidungen treffen. Sich mit den richtigen Leuten umgeben, ist der Schlüssel zu Erfolg, Glück und zu der Gewissheit, dass du gesunde Babys kriegst. Das ist eine grauenhafte Analogie lacht. Unser jetziges Line-up ist sehr stabil. Ich liebe die Jungs einfach und wir halten uns gegenseitig den Rücken frei.
HF: Eure Musik ist definitiv weit davon entfernt, als Mainstream abgestempelt zu werden. Wie schwer oder vielleicht auch einfach ist es, sich eine solide Fan-Basis und ein weltweites Publikum aufzubauen, wenn man ein Fisch in einem eher kleinen musikalischen Teich ist?
Dan: Es ist in jedem Teich schwer, ehrlich gesagt. Am Ende läuft alles auf Talent und harte Arbeit hinaus. Wir arbeiten uns echt den Arsch ab. Es dauert alles seine Zeit, aber jeder neue Fan zählt und wird von uns wertgeschätzt. Ohne unsere Fans würden wir nicht existieren.
HF: Ihr geht jetzt das erste Mal auf Headliner Tour. Fühlt sich das anders an, als eure bisherigen Touren? Ich weiß, ihr wart erst vor ein paar Monaten in Europa, aber wie sieht es mit Plänen in Bezug auf eine Rückkehr aus, um euren europäischen Fans “Luciferous” vorzustellen?
Dan: Wir haben ja vorher schon Headliner Shows gespielt. Es ist für uns nicht so ein großer Unterschied. Ich persönlich spiele ja eigentlich schon gerne früh, um dann noch mehr von der Nacht zu haben. Gleichzeitig bedeutet Headliner sein aber auch mehr Anstrengung und das ist dann am Ende doch das größere Gefühl der Belohnung für mich. Im Moment wird an Plänen für eine Luciferous-Tour in Europa gearbeitet, aber wir werden sehen.

Hellfire Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.
Today we talk to Dan Watson, vocalist of Enterprise Earth who will release their new album „Luciferous“ on April 5, 2019.
HF: Congratulations on your new album. It came with a lot of surprises, things I at least didn’t expect from Enterprise Earth, like some rather fragile acoustic moments, more room for melodic parts in general and even some clean vocals on „There Is No Tomorrow“. Is this a developement that came kind of naturally or was it a conscious approach to try something new?
Dan: It was a very natural process with the addition of our new guitarist Gabe Mangold. He brought his own style and flare in addition to Bj’s classic EE style. The new sounds that came forth also allowed me to use vocal styles I didn’t really get to utilize on past EE material. I write vocals to accompany a song and work with it. To us, it’s about creating great songs. The cleans on “There Is No Tomorrow” are actually Gabe’s cleans.
HF: Since the two singles you released so far didn’t give away much of these new facettes to your sound, will you introduce it to your fans with another song before the release of „Lucifereous“? What kind of reactions to you expect? And talking about singles, why didn’t „Only Hell Will Embrace The Damned“ make it on the album?
Dan: Yes, the next single we release with the album will showcase a bit of the new sound we have now. At first we wanted to give our current fans what they expected from us. A progression built off of our classic style. With our last single we want to give them a taste of the surprises we have in store with the release of the album. Our fans are important to us and we think about them in our material but at the end of the day, what’s most important to us is how we feel about our own music
and with “Luciferous”, we feel as though we’ve written our best record to date and couldn’t be more pleased with what we’ve created. “Only Hell Will Embrace The Damned” was a single we released to showcase the new lineup and style we were going to head towards and wasn’t in mind at the same time the album was written, so we decided to keep that a stand alone single.
HF:Even though Enterprise Earth is only a few years old, you had to deal with a couple of changes in line up. Obviously it didn’t stop you, but in what other ways did it affect the bands developement?
Dan: We’ve went through many changes and to me it was like dating around until you found the right one to start a family with. It gets hard on the road and you have to make hard decisions together when you’re in a band. Having the right people around you in this environment is key to success, happiness and to make sure your babies are born healthy. That’s a horrible analogy haha. The lineup we have now is very solid. I love all the guys and we have each other’s backs.
HF: Your music is definetely far away from being labeled as mainstream. How difficult oder maybe easy is it to gain a solid fanbase and a worldwide audience, being a fish in a rather small musical pond?
Dan: It’s hard in any pond honestly. It’s all about talent and hard work. We work our asses off. It takes time but every new fan counts and is valued by us. Without them we wouldn’t exist.
HF: At the moment, you’re on your first ever Headliner Tour. Does it feel different from the tours you did before? I know, you’ve been to Europe only a few months ago, but are there any plans on returning to present your new album to your European fans?
Dan: We’ve done headliner shows before. It’s not that different to us. In my personal opinion I enjoy playing earlier and having more of the night to hang out but at the same time headlining takes more effort and at the end of the day that’s more rewarding to me. There are plans in the works for a European Luciferous tour but we’ll see.
