Was lässt euch allen Widrigkeiten zum Trotz weitermachen?

Also hat Jameson ihn ersetzt.

Mike: Also…”Slave To The Grind” hat einfach Spaß gemacht.

Hellfire Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.

Today we talk to Mike Valente, guitarist of Brick By Brick from Albany/New York who will release their new album „Hive Mentality“ on February 22, 2019.

HF: Congratulations on your new album. The combination of cover art and album title shows your critical view on the human race. In your opinion what can we do to leave the comfort zone of being part of a collective and why is it important to stay individual and critical towards society?

Mike: Thank you for having us! “Hive Mentality” is not a stab at humanity per se, but a stab at higher “influential” powers such as politics, corporations and social media. It is a warning to humanity to be an individual and not to get caught up in traps that are set for others to profit. Being an individual is our right. Certain entities want to remove that right and use you for their personal gains. This album will hopefully wake people up and help direct them to take time for themselves and enjoy simple things.

HF: „Hive Mentality“ is your third album since Ray joined on vocals in 2014. Seems like you have a lot to say. What the driving force behind your music? What keeps you going against all odds?

Mike: We write for ourselves first. We write to have fun and not look at it as a job. We have fun together and view it as an escape. We write about real issues and feelings that we carry. When this stops being fun then we will hang it up.

HF: With you being the only remaining founding member of the band, how did Brick By Brick change over the years with every new member, musically or in other ways and which are the things that stayed the same, the core of Brick By Brick so to speak.

Mike: The original lineup was put together among 4 friends with the concept of having fun and creating cool music. As time went on, some peoples views changed (hence being an individual). Rory (our first drummer) was a very intricate musician. His timing was impeccable. He left because of a job offer and couldn’t commit to the band anymore. So Jameson came along to replace him. Jamo is a very different drummer and is more “flowing”. He gave a lot of the older songs more flare and writing with him is not as restrictive. Next, Rich (the old singer) had issues from the start. He had personal demons that he couldn’t shake. He lied and did a lot of stupid things that friends don’t do to each other. It hindered the band because we didn’t play that much. So replacing him with Ray was the best move. Ray brings excitement and flavor to the music and is loyal and can be trusted. Friendship 101…..ha lastly, Sean (the bass player) made some decisions that impacted his life to the extent of him not being able to continue. People get older and choose different paths. Andy came in and is a great friend for many years. Together, it is a formula that has many laughs along the way. I’m the mainstay in the band because the music is pretty much the only thing that keeps me out of trouble. I look at music as a saving grace. I love it and it is what I can turn to when shit hits the fan.

HF: You chose to do two cover songs on your new album, „Slave To The Grind“ from Skid Row and Motörhead’s „Iron Fist“. Why those songs, how do they fit the Brick By Brick attitude?

Mike: Well…..”Slave To The Grind” was a fun song. It was a song that has a message along the same lines as what we convey. I heard the song and while listening to it, I could hear it being heavier, so I suggested it and it was collective decision to do it. “Iron Fist” was a tribute to the greats! Motörhead is a staple in the metal community and we paid our homage to them with our rendition. Again, it was a fun song to play!

HF: After celebrating the release of your new album in New York together with Dying Fetus, you’ll head over to Europe to join this years run of Rebellion Tour. You’ve been touring Europe before but I suppose not in such company 😉 What do you expect of these shows? Are you still getting nervous before entering a stage?

Mike: Rebellion will be an exciting run! We went over last year with Slapshot and had a blast. Rebellion is going to expose us to another element on this tour. We are more of a metal band that dips into the hardcore genre and we fit perfect on this lineup. It’s going to expose us to new people that didn’t see us last time. We don’t get “nervous”, it’s more of an “anxious” feeling. Excited……again the word “fun” is in the forefront of this band.

HF: Thank you very much for the interview. We wish you all the best for the future and lots of success with your album.
