Mit dem Hellfire Quick5 Interview versuchen wir für unsere Leser möglichst interessante Infos aus den Musikern rauszukitzeln, ohne dass sie sich seitenlangen Fragen/Antworten hingeben müssen. Wir vom Hellfire bemühen uns dabei, (mehr oder weniger) kurz und prägnant im Rahmen von 5 Fragen zu agieren (manchmal kann eine Frage auch gedoppelt oder getrippelt sein); den Musikern obliegt es, nach ihrem Gutdünken zu antworten: kurz und knapp bis hin zu ausschweifend und umfangreich.
Diesmal sprachen wir mit Bert Van Dyck, Sänger der Punk Band This Means War, die im Januar 2019 ihr Debütalbum “Heartstrings” veröffentlichen werden.
HF: Als Band ist This Means War noch ziemlich neu, aber ihr seid alle erfahrene Musiker. Sei doch bitte so nett und stell zuerst einmal die Mitglieder der Band und ihren jeweiligen musikalischen Hintergrund vor.
Bert: Wir sind alles Old School Punks, die schon seit vielen Jahren in vielen Bands spielen und spielten. Carlo (Bass) und Dave (Gitarre) spielen immer noch bei Discipline. Dave hat auch bei Backfire! und Angel Crew gespielt. Dries (Schlagzeug) und ich waren bei Convict.
HF: Warum habt ihr euch Punk als Musik-Stil ausgesucht. Was bedeutet Punk für euch?
Bert: Punk ist unsere Rettungsleine! Als wir mit Convict und Agnostic Front auf Tour waren, habe ich viele echte Old School Punk Bands entdeckt. AF lieben Oi und Punk und deshalb liefen ständig viele von diesen Bands auf unseren Fahrten von einer Show zur nächsten. So sind wir mit dem “Helden der Arbeiterklasse” Lebensstil in Berührung gekommen. Lies dir einfach mal die Texte an von Bands wie The Business, Cockney Rejects, Cock Sparrer, Sham 69…dann weisst du, was ich meine. Und das ist genau das, für was wir auch 2018/2019 stehen. Punk war schon immer “Underground” und wird es auch immer sein… 40 Jahre, nachdem Punk in Großbritannien entstanden ist, geht es immer noch darum, den Leuten gegen den Strich zu gehen und das “Establishment” in die Eier zu treten 😉
HF: Ich vermute, dass The Old Firm Casuals Album “This Means War” ist der Namenspate für eure Band. Sind die Jungs immer noch eine Art Einfluss für euch? Als erfahrene Musiker, habt ihr da überhaupt noch Bands, zu denen ihr aufschaut? Und mit wie vielen davon habt ihr schon die Bühne geteilt?
Bert: Ja, Old Firm Casuals sind wahrscheinlich der größte Einfluss für uns und der Grund, warum wir diese Band vor zwei Jahren gegründet haben. “Perry Boys” von OFC hat sowohl Dries als auch mich unglaublich beeindruckt und hat uns die Kraft und die Entschlossenheit gegeben, diese Band zu gründen. Wir sehen zu allen möglichen Bands auf, solange sie authentisch sind und sich weder auf noch abseits der Bühne als Arschlöcher aufführen. OFC, Cock Sparrer, GBH, The Business, Grade 2, Street Dogs, CRIM, Barstool Preachers, Dropkick Murphy’s, Lion’s Law, Stomper 98, Flogging Molly und viele mehr. Es ist total verrückt, aber in den zwei Jahren unseres Bestehens haben wir mit fast jeder der eben genannten Bands gespielt…
HF: Welcher eurer Songs, egal ob alt oder neu, fast am besten zusammen, worum es bei This Means War geht? Welcher ist das beste Beispiel für euren individuellen Stil und warum?
Bert: Definitiv “Sailing Anarchy”. Die Kombination aus roher Punk Power und melodischen Vocals macht diese Band aus. Auf unserem neuen Album “Heartstrings” sind “Pressure”, “The Unseen”, “Greed Is Out” und “Forever” meine Lieblingssongs.
HF: Besser als mit einem Album Release kann man ein neues Jahr eigentlich nicht anfangen. Aber ich hoffe, ihr noch ein paar gute Vorsätze mehr, zum Beispiel ein paar europaweite Gigs oder sogar eine Tour. Wie sehen eure Pläne für 2019 aus, um den Release von “Heartstrings” zu feiern?
Bert: Heutzutage ist es extrem wichtig, rauszugehen und dein Album auf der Bühne zu promoten…und genau das werden wir tun…wir freuen uns darauf, so viele Shows und Festivals zu spielen wie nur möglich. Hellfire Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.
Today we talk to Bert Van Dyck, vocalist of This Means War, who will release their debut full length album „Heartstrings“ in January 2019.
HF: As a band, This Means War is quite new, but you are all experienced musicians. Be so kind to introduce us to the members of the band and their musical background.
Bert: We’re all ‘old school punks’ who played for many years in many bands. Carlo (bass) and Dave (guitar) still kicking ass with Discipline. Dave also played in Backfire! and Angel Crew. Dries (drums) and I played with Convict.
HF: Why did you choose punk as your style of music? What does punk mean to you?
Bert: Punk is our lifeline! I discovered a lot of really old school punk bands when we where on tour with Convict and Agnostic Front. AF loves oi and punk and so they played a lot of those bands when we were driving from one show to another. That’s how we got in touch with the ‘working class hero’ lifestyle. Just read the lyrics from bands such as The Business, Cockney Rejects, Cock Sparrer, Sham 69 … and you’ll know what I mean. That is exactly where we stand for also in 2018/2019. Punk has always be and will always be ‘underground’ .. Forty years after punk was founded in the UK it’s still about going against the grain and kick ‘the establishment’ in the balls (:
HF: I suppose, the “This Means War” album by The Old Firm Casuals was namesake to your band. Are they a kind of influence to you? As experienced musicians, are there still bands you look up to? And with how many of them did you already share a stage?
Bert: Yeah, Old Firm Casuals is probably the biggest influence and also the reason why we started this band two years ago. ‘Perry Boys’ by OFC had such an impact on both Dries and me and gave us the strength and determination to start this band. We look up to all kind of bands, as long they are genuine and aren’t assholes on and off the stage … OFC, Cock Sparrer, GBH, The Business, Grade 2, Street Dogs, CRIM, Barstool Preachers, Dropkick Murphy’s, Lion’s Law, Stomper 98, Flogging Molly and many more. It’s crazy but in the two years of our existence we played with almost every band mentioned above .. .
HF: Which of your songs, old or new, sums up best what This Means War is all about? Which one is the best example for your individual style and why?
Bert: “Sailing Anarchy” for sure. The combination of the ‘raw’ punk power with the melodic vocals really defines this band. On the new record ‘Heartstrings’ “Pressure”, “The Unseen”, “Greed is Out” and “Forever” are my favorite songs.
HF: No better way to kick of a new year than releasing a new album. But I hope there’ll be some more new years resolutions, for example a couple of gigs across Europe or even a tour. What are your plans for 2019 to celebrate the release of „Heartstrings“?
Bert: It’s so important these days to go out and promote your record on stage ..
