Das Hellfire Magazin hatte die Gelegenheit im Rahmen des “Blues Alive Festival” im Bürgerhaus Stollwerck in Köln, die Blues Sängerin Vanja Sky zu interviewen. Eine sehr angenehme und durchaus lustige Sängerin. Wir hatten viel Spaß!!!
Eine Anmerkung zuvor: Vanja sagte mir, sie spricht nicht so viel, also könnte es ein kurzes Interview sein.

HF: Vanja, man sieht Dich als eine Antwort zu Sheryl Crow. Wie sehr schmeichelt es Dir?
Vanja: Das ist sehr schön. Ich denke, Sheryl ist eine großartige Sängerin, eine großartige Musikerin, aber meine Musik ist eine ganz andere als das, was sie macht. (Sie schaut mich an).
HF: Das ist alles, was Du zu sagen hast?
Vanja: Ja! (wir müssen beide lachen)
HF: Du hast bereits mit vielen Größen der Szene zusammengearbeitet. Was hast Du aus dieser Zeit für Dich mitgenommen?
Vanja: Es ist eine große Ehre für mich, denn Du weißt, dass ich sehr spät mit der Musik angefangen habe. Ich war neunzehn, also die erste Tour, die ich gemacht habe, war “Blues Caravan” mit Mike Zito und Bernaard Allison. Beide sind Spitzenmusiker in diesem Geschäft. Ich hatte natürlich Angst, weil ich keine Erfahrung hatte. Ich wurde direkt ins Feuer geworfen. Als ich bei der ersten Tour mit den Besten auf der Bühne stand, habe ich viel gelernt. Und ich lerne immer noch dazu. Ich spiele ständig mit tollen Musikern, und es macht mir Spaß.
HF: Du wurdest ins Feuer geworfen und hast es überlebt.
Vanja: Ja im selben Moment. Und immer noch am Leben.
HF: Dein Album “Woman Named Trouble” wurde 2020 als einer der besten Platten ausgezeichnet. Konntest Du das voraussehen?
Vanja: Nun, es ist wahr. (wir fangen beide an zu lachen) Ich meine, es ist ein großes Kompliment (sie kann nicht aufhören zu lachen). Ich bin sehr dankbar. Für mich ist es ein großer Schritt von “Bad Penny”, das war das erste Album und ich hatte keine Ahnung über all das, so wie das Album klingt. Ich hatte damals noch keine eigene Band. Also bin ich einfach ins Studio um ein Album zu machen. Ich war noch nie in einem Studio. Und ich hatte wirklich kein Konzept im Kopf, wie ich wollte, dass das Album klingt oder die Songs. Mit “Woman Named Trouble” war ich also zwei Jahre unterwegs oder so. Und man lernt eine Menge, wenn man live spielt. Jetzt war ein besseres Konzept in meinem Kopf. So wie es für mich klingen sollte.
HF: Dein aktuelles Album hat den Titel “Reborn”.
Vanja: Es ist besser als “Woman…” (sie kann den Satz nicht beenden, weil sie schon wieder lacht).
HF: Was möchtest Du uns mit dem Titel sagen?
Vanja: Es heißt “Reborn” weil wir dieses “C” hatten. Es war ein großer Zusammenbruch, vor allem für alle Künstler. Keiner wusste, ob wir nochmal von vorne beginnen können. Danach kam “Reborn”. Ich glaube für alle Künstler auf der Welt. Der zweite Grund, warum es “Reborn” heißt, weil es viel rockiger als die beiden vorherigen Alben ist. Und natürlich ist die Produktion moderner.
HF: Du coverst unter andrem den Song “Bad Penny” von Rory Gallagher. Welche Musiker haben Dich musikalisch inspiriert?
Vanja: Rory selbst hat mich inspiriert. Als ich ihn hörte, ich bin leider zu jung, um ihn live gehört zu haben, aber ich fühlte für mich, als ich ihn das erste Mal hörte, auf YouTube natürlich, dass er etwas Besonderes war. Gerade in der Zeit, in der diese Musik viel beliebter war als heute. Er hatte eine besondere Energie, er ging auf die Bühne, er war sich selbst und er lebte die Musik. Ich war wirklich “WOW”. Wie macht man es Leute verrückt zu machen? Rory ist einer meiner Lieblingsmusiker. Was ich gerne mache, ist einige Songs von ihm auf mein Album zu packen. Und wir spielen auch Songs von ihm, um seine Musik am Leben zu erhalten.
HF: Deshalb hast Du auch “Shadow Play” gespielt, es war so großartig ein bisschen psychedelisch.
Vanja: Das ist einer der besten Songs für mich. Du hast die Verbindung zum Publikum, sie können mitsingen.
HF: Also ein Spiel zwischen Dir und dem Publikum?
Vanja: In diesem Song können sie das einfachste “oooh, oooh” singen.
HF: Also Vanja, danke, dass du dir die Zeit genommen hast.
Vanja: Es war kurz, das ist mein Lieblingsinterview für immer. Ein siebenminütiges Interview.

HF: Vanja, you are seen as an answer to Sheryl Crow. How much does it flatter you? (even at this first question she laughs)
Vanja: It’s very nice. I think Sheryl is a great singer, a great musician but our music is a quite different. That what she does i think. (She looks at me)
HF: That’s all what you have to say?
Vanja: Yes! ( we both have to laugh)
HF: You’ve worked with a lot of the big names in the scene. What did you take away from this time?
Vanja: It’s a great honour for me, because you know I started very late with music. I was ninteen, so first tour I did was ‘Blues Caravan’ with Mike Zito and Bernaard Allison. Both are top musicians in that business. So I was scared of course, ’cause I had no experience. I went straight into the fire. Going with the best on stage by the first tour, I learned a lot. And I’m still learning. I play with great musicians constantly and I enjoy it.
HF: Thrown into the fire and you survived it.
Vanja: Yes for now. And still living.
HF: Your album ‘Woman Named Trouble’ was awarded as one of the best records in 2020. What do you say to that?
Vanja: Well, it’s true. (we both start laughing) I mean it’s a great compliment (she can’t stop laughing). I’m very thankful. For me it’s a big step from ‘Bad Penny’, which was the first album and I had no idea about anything how I wanted the album to sound. I didn’t had my own band at that time. So I was just in the studio making an album. I was never in a studio before. And I really had no concept in my head. What I wanted the album to sound or the songs. So ‘Woman Named Trouble’ I was on the road for two years or so. And you learn a lot when you play live. It was a better concept in my head. How I want it to sound.
HF: Your current album is called ‘Reborn’.
Vanja: So it’s better than ‘Woman”‘ (she can’t complete the sentence and starts laughing again)
HF: What do you want to tell us with the title?
Vanja: It’s called ‘Reborn’ because we had this ‘C’ and it was a big breakdown especially for all the artists. Nobody knew if we gonna start again. After that was ‘Reborn’ I think for every artist in the world. And the second thing why it’s called “Reborn” it`s much more rock than the previous two albums. Of course the production is more modern.
HF: Among other things, you cover the song ‘Bad Penny’ by Rory Gallagher. Which musicians have inspired you musically?
Vanja: Rory himself inspired me. When I heard him, unfortunately I`m too young to hear him live, but I felt when I heard him the first time on Youtube of course that he was something special. Even for that time where this music was much more popular than today. He had some special energy, he went on stage, it was him and he lived the music. So I was really ‘wow’. How do you do that people is crazy. Rory is one of my favourite musicians. What I like to do is always some songs of him on the album. And we play also a few songs of him, to keep his music alive.
HF: So therefore you played ‘Shadow Play’ it was so great, a little bit psychedelic.
Vanja: This is one of the best songs for me. And you have the connection with the audience, they can sing.
HF: Just a game between you and the audience.
Vanja: In this song they can sing the easiest thing ‘oooh, oooh’.
HF: So Vanja, thanx for taking the time.
Vanja: It was short, this is my favourite interview forever. Seven minute interview.
