Die “Hellfire’s Quick 5”-Interviews versuchen, innerhalb eines engen Rahmens von f\u00fcnf Fragen und f\u00fcnf Antworten eine Menge Informationen zu geben. Manchmal kann es vorkommen, dass eine Frage aus zwei oder drei Fragen besteht.
\n<\/strong>Es liegt an den Musikern, kurz, l\u00e4nger oder \u00fcbertrieben zu antworten. In diesem Fall erh\u00f6hen wir Quick5 auf Quick6….<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Thalassic”, das neue Ensiferum-Album, wird am 10. Juli erscheinen, drei Jahre nach der Ver\u00f6ffentlichung von “Two Paths”. Es ist nicht wirklich \u00fcblich, dass Ensiferum eine L\u00fccke von drei Jahren zwischen zwei Ver\u00f6ffentlichungen hat.
\n<\/strong>F\u00fcr mich pers\u00f6nlich ist es eines der st\u00e4rksten Ensiferum-Alben aller Zeiten.
\n<\/strong>Wir sprachen mit Sami Hinkka, dem Bassisten der finnischen Horde, um uns einen \u00dcberblick \u00fcber den aktuellen Stand der Band zu verschaffen, und auch um ein wenig zur\u00fcckzublicken….<\/strong><\/p>\n

$\"\"$ HF: Bevor wir \u00fcber das neue Album “Thalassic” sprechen, m\u00fcssen wir zwei Jahre zur\u00fcckgehen. 2018 habt Ihr eine Akustik-Tour gespielt, was f\u00fcr mich wirklich ein Widerspruch in sich war. F\u00fcr mich passt es nicht, Ensiferum-Songs akustisch zu h\u00f6ren.<\/b>
\nIch habe mich dagegen gewehrt, einen Eurer Akustik-Auftritte zu besuchen, daher kann ich nicht beurteilen, wie Ihre Fans solche Ensiferum-Shows akzeptieren.
\n<\/strong>Welche Idee steckte dahinter, wie habt Ihr geplant, umgesetzt und wie war das Gef\u00fchl der Bandmitglieder und die Reaktion des Publikums?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Hallo!
\nDie Akustik-Tour war etwas, wor\u00fcber wir jahrelang gesprochen haben; und wir hatten eine L\u00fccke in unserem Kalender.
\nAnfangs hatten wir einige Akustik-Gigs in Finnland gespielt, und sie haben sehr gut funktioniert. Also beschlossen wir, diesen “Zirkus” on the Road zu bringen.
\nDie Fans haben dieses \u201eEvening With Ensiferum” Gef\u00fchl wirklich geliebt, und wir hatten viel Spa\u00df.<\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

HF: F\u00fcr mich ist “Thalassic” ein wirklich starkes Album, welches meiner Meinung nach die St\u00e4rke der ersten Ensiferum-Alben mit den Folk-Einfl\u00fcssen Ihrer letzten Ver\u00f6ffentlichungen aufgreift.
\n<\/strong>Ist dies das Ergebnis einer ungeplanten Entwicklung oder habt Ihr diese Markenzeichen bewusst kombiniert?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Vielen Dank. F\u00fcr uns l\u00e4uft der Kompositionsprozess immer gleich ab: Wir bringen rohe Ideen\/Melodien\/Riffs in den Proberaum und arrangieren sie zu Liedern zusammen.
\nWie sich ein neues Album entwickelt, h\u00e4ngt also davon ab, welche Art von Ideen wir einbringen. Wir planen also nie im Voraus, dass wir in diese oder jene Richtung einschlagen wollen. Wir schreiben einfach Songs, die f\u00fcr uns gut klingen.
\nDiesmal hatte das neue Material eine Art Old-School-Vibes, das n\u00e4chste Album k\u00f6nnte wieder ganz anderes werden.
\nDie Zukunft wird\u2019s zeigen.<\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

HF: Der Titel des Albums bezieht sich auf die griechische Mythologie. Hat Euch die nordische Geschichte und die Sagen nicht genug Stoff f\u00fcr ein weiteres Album geboten, dass Ihr \u00fcber die finnischen Grenzen hinaus nach neuer Inspiration suchen musstet?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Dieses Mal gab es \u00fcberhaupt keine Grenzen f\u00fcr uns, um nach Inspiration zu suchen. Es gab aus der Vergangenheit viele Texte im Rohstadium, die wir nicht genutzt hatten, weil wir genug fertige Songs hatten!
\nIch hatte Texte \u00fcber Mythen\/Legenden aus der ganzen Welt, zum Beispiel aus Japan, S\u00fcdamerika usw.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: F\u00fcr mich scheint es, dass der Clean-Gesang auf “Thalassic” viel mehr Gewicht bekommen hat, als er es in der Vergangenheit der Fall war.
\n<\/strong>War das der Plan vor der Aufnahme oder war es eine zwangsl\u00e4ufige Entwicklung, den Songs ein neues \u201eGewand” zu geben?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Unser neues Bandmitglied Pekka Montin (Keys\/Clean-Gesang) stie\u00df zur Band, und seine Stimme brachte uns v\u00f6llig neue M\u00f6glichkeiten, die wir in unserer Musik verwenden konnten.
\nWir haben das dann \u00fcberall dort einsetzten, wo es dem Zweck diente\/einen Song besser machte. Dieses Mal gab es viele St\u00fccke, die wirklich von cleanen Gesang profitieren, vielleicht wird es auf dem n\u00e4chsten Album viel weniger davon geben, wer wei\u00df.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: Im Laufe der Jahre war die Fluktuation an den Tasten und am Akkordeon wirklich gro\u00df bei Ensiferum. Ich vermute, dass diese Musiker in der Vergangenheit eigene Projekte hatten, so dass sie nur vor\u00fcbergehend bei Ensiferum spielten.
\n<\/strong>War der Rest der Band mit dieser Situation zufrieden? Ich sch\u00e4tze, die “Ins und Outs” sind f\u00fcr eine Bandgemeinschaft nicht gerade f\u00f6rderlich.
\n<\/strong>Jetzt habt Ihr einen neuen Mann dabei, Pekka Montin, der nicht nur f\u00fcr die Tasten, sondern auch f\u00fcr den Gesang zust\u00e4ndig ist. <\/strong>Glaubt Ihr, dass das auch f\u00fcr die Zukunft Bestand haben wird? <\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Jedes Mitglied, das in der Vergangenheit zu Ensiferum kam, war ein Vollmitglied. Wir haben nie jemanden “angestellt”, der f\u00fcr eine bestimmte Zeit dabei sein sollte.
\nLebenssituationen \u00e4ndern sich, das ist normal. Ein Vollzeitmusiker zu sein, der viel in der Welt tourt, ist harte Arbeit, die alle anderen Bereiche des Lebens in Mitleidenschaft zieht; und so ist es kein Wunder, dass viele Menschen die Rei\u00dfleine ziehen.
\nPekka macht seit Jahrzehnten Musik, er hat sich zu 110% der Band verschrieben und er hat sehr schnell seinen “Platz” in der Band gefunden, also gibt es keinen Grund zu glauben, dass er nicht hier ist, um zu bleiben. $\"\"$ <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: Kommen wir nun zum \u00e4rgerlichen Thema Corona: Die Pandemie vernichtet gerade viele Arbeitspl\u00e4tze; und das Ende ist nicht absehbar.
\n<\/strong>Unabh\u00e4ngig davon habt Ihr Euer neues Album ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Es wird mit all den Einschr\u00e4nkungen nicht einfach sein, es mit einer Tournee weltweit zu promoten.
\n<\/strong>Seid Ihr Freunde von Autokinos mit sehr begrenztem Sound und nur einigen hundert Fans in Autos, die nur \u00fcber die Radios mith\u00f6ren, oder plant Ihr, die Tournee zu verschieben, bis sich die Situation etwas entspannt hat?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH: <\/strong>Die Ver\u00f6ffentlichung des Albums zu verschieben war nie eine Option f\u00fcr uns oder Metal Blade. Wir haben einfach nur einen Stream zur Albumver\u00f6ffentlichung gemacht – und es hat Spa\u00df gemacht. Aber das war schon sehr seltsam.
\nIch denke, diese Drive-In-Gigs sind nichts f\u00fcr Ensiferum. Wir werden warten, bis Tourneen wieder m\u00f6glich sind, und dann werden wir so viel wie m\u00f6glich touren, bevor wir wieder ins Studio gehen, um das n\u00e4chste Album aufzunehmen.
\nZumindest ist dies im Moment der Plan. Die Zeit wird es zeigen.<\/p>\n

Hellfire\u2018s Quick 5<\/strong> <\/strong>interviews try to give lot of info within narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes can happen, that one question consists of two or three.
\n<\/strong>It\u2019s up to musicians to answer short, longer or excessively. In this case we\u2019ll increase Quick5 to Quick6\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThalassic\u201d, the new Ensiferum album will be released July 10th, three years after \u201cTwo Paths\u201d was published. Not really common for Ensiferum, to have a gap of three years between two releases.
\n<\/strong>For me personally, one of the strongest Ensiferum albums ever.
\n<\/strong>We talked to Sami Hinkka, bass player of the Finnish horde, to get overview about the actual status of the band, and also looking back a little bit\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: Before we talk about the new album \u201cThalassic\u201d, we have to go back two years. 2018 you played an acoustic tour, which was really an oxymoron for me. For me it doesn\u2019t fit, hearing Ensiferum songs acoustic.
\n<\/strong>I resisted, to visit one of your acoustic gigs, so I cannot judge, how your fans accepted such kind of Ensiferum shows.
\n<\/strong>What was the idea behind this, how did you plan, transposed and how was feeling of band members and reaction of the audiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Hi! Heh, acoustic tour was something we talked about for years and we had a empty gap in our calendar and we did few acoustic gigs in Finland and they worked out very well so we decided to take that \u201dcircus\u201d on the road. Fans really loved this \u201dEvening With Ensiferum\u201d -feeling and we had lots of fun. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: For me \u201cThalassic\u201d is a really strong album, which picks up in my opinion strength of the first Ensiferum albums with the folk influences of your latest releases.
\n<\/strong>Is this the result of unstudied development or did you combine these trademarks conscious?<\/strong><\/p>\n

$\"\"$ SH:<\/strong> Thank you. For us the composing process goes always the same: we bring raw ideas\/melodies\/riffs to the rehearsal room and arrange them to songs together. So how a new album turn out, depends of what kind of ideas we are coming up. So we never think in advance that we need to this or that direction, we just keep writing songs that sound good to us. This time the new material had kinda old school -vibes, the next album might be something totally different. Time will tell.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: Title of the album referring to Greek mythology. Gave Nordic history and sagas not enough stuff for another album, so that you had to look over the Finnish borders for new inspiration?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Heh, this time there was no boundaries at all where I searched the inspiration. There were many raw lyrics that were left out because we did have enough finished songs! I had lyrics about myths\/legends from around the world for example from Japan, South America etc.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: For me it seems, that clean vocals on \u201cThalassic\u201d got much more weight, than it had in the past. Was this the plan, before recording or was it necessarily for you to give the songs the right \u201crobe\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Our new member Pekka Montin (keys\/clean vocals) joined the band and his voice gave us totally new element to use in our music so obviously we used this asset where ever it served the purpose\/made a song better. This time there were many songs that really benefit from clean vocals, maybe on the next album there will much less of those, who knows. <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: Over the years fluctuation at the keys and accordion was really big. I guess in the past these musician had own projects, so that they joined Ensiferum only temporarily.
\n<\/strong>Did this satisfy rest of the band? I guess, the \u201cins and outs\u201d are not so healthy for a band community.
\n<\/strong>Now you\u2019ve hired a new guy, Pekka Montin, who is not only responsible for the keys, but also for the vocals.
\n<\/strong>Do you think, this will withstand even for the future? <\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Every member who joined Ensiferum in the past, was a full member so we never \u201dhired\u201d anyone to be there for certain time. Life situations change and that\u2019s normal. Being a full time musician who tours a lot around the world is hard work and it takes it\u2019s toll on all other parts of life so it\u2019s no wonder that many people give up. Pekka has been doing music for decades, he is committed to the band with 110% -attitude and he has found his \u201dplace\u201d in the band very fast so there is no reason to think that he is not here to stay.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

HF: Finally coming to annoying issue: Corona disease is destroying lot of jobs actually; and the end in\u2019t foreseeable. Regardless if this tragedy, you release new album. It will be not easy, to promote this with a tour with all the limitations worldwide.
\n<\/strong>Are you friends of drive-in cinemas with very limited sound and some hundred fans in cars, sound only over car radios, or do you plan to postpone tour till situation will be more loosened?<\/strong><\/p>\n

SH:<\/strong> Postponing the album release was never an option for us or Metal Blade. We just did an album release stream -gig and it was fun but very weird. I don\u2019t see Ensiferum doing any drive-in -gigs. We\u2019ll wait when the touring is possible again and then we\u2019ll tour as much as possible before hitting the studio to record the next album. At least, this is the plan at the moment. Time will tell.<\/p>\n
