Mit dem Hellfire Quick5 Interview versuchen wir dem Leser möglichst interessante Infos aus den Musikern rauszukitzeln, ohne dass sie sich seitenlangen Fragen/Antworten hingeben müssen.
Wir vom Hellfire bemühen uns, (mehr oder weniger) kurz und prägnant im Rahmen von 5 Fragen zu agieren (manchmal kann eine Frage auch gedoppelt oder getrippelt sein); dem Musiker obliegt es, nach seinem Gutdünken zu antworten: kurz und knapp bis hin zu ausschweifend und umfangreich.
Diesmal sprachen wir mit Jonah Weingarten (u.a. Pyramaze) und Matt Barlow (ex-Iced Eaerth) über deren neuestes Projekt “We Are Sentinels” (das Review zum Album findet ihr HIER).
HF: Vor einigen Jahren hat Matt das Pyramaze-Album “Immortal”eingesungen. Wie kam es zur erneuten Zusammenarbeit und zur Gründung von “We Are Sentinels”? Hattet ihr damals schon die Idee, eines Tages ein weiteres Album zusammen aufzunehmen?
Jonah: Eigentlich ist dies der zehnte Jahrestag von “Immortal”, also ist es mehr als nur ein paar Jahre her. Matt und ich haben uns wieder zusammengetan, als er während der Prog Power USA 2016 bei Pyramaze auf der Bühne stand. Wir spielten dort ein spezielles Set mit Songs aus unserer gesamten Karriere. Matt und ich verband schon immer eine große musikalische Chemie und ich denke, wir beide wussten, dass es Zeit war, etwas Neues und Besonderes zu schaffen. Bei We Are Sentinels war es eigentlich Matts Idee, etwas nicht “Metallisches”zu machen, sondern etwas mehr außerhalb des üblichen Rahmens.
Matt: Ja, es ist alles meine Schuld, dass es keine Metallplatte ist! Haha! Es schien wirklich etwas zu sein, das einfach getan werden musste…. etwas, das wir tun mussten…. ich denke, wir haben es geschafft!
HF: “We Are Sentinels” weckt Erinnerungen an Filmkompositionen verschiedener Fantasy-Streifen, Rock- und Metal-Elemente sucht man hier vergeblich. War das Album von Anfang an so geplant oder ist es erst im Laufe des Songwritings entstanden? Und was für ein Konzept steckt dahinter?
Jonah: Ich denke, dass alle Elemente des Metals, die die Leute finden, von einigen der Vocals oder vielleicht von der Intensität einiger der härter schlagenden epischen Teile herrühren. Der einzige Plan, den wir von Anfang an hatten, war, dass Matt und ich ein Album machen würden, das ausschließlich aus Keyboards/Klavier und Gesang besteht. Von dort aus ist nur der Himmel die Grenze. Meine größten musikalischen Einflüsse kommen von der Filmmusik, also denke ich, dass es ziemlich natürlich ist, dass dies letztendlich das Ergebnis ist.
Matt: Ich schätze das hohe Drama der Filmmusik sehr. Ich liebe es, dass ich diesem Musikgenre “eine Stimme geben” konnte. Es hat wirklich Spaß gemacht!
HF: Bei dieser Art von Musik kann man sich mehrere verschiedene Stimmen vorstellen. Jonah, hast du Matt von Anfang an als den – einzigen – Sänger von “We Are Sentinels” im Sinn gehabt oder gab es vielleicht noch andere Sänger, an die du gedacht hast?
Jonah: Es war immer nur Matt, da dies alles nur aufgrund einer Reihe von Diskussionen existiert, die Matt und ich gegen Ende 2016 hatten. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, das mit jemandem außer Matt zu machen (Anmerkung: Jonah sagt „…anyone but Matt“)
Matt: Hat er mich gerade “A butt matt” genannt? Ich bin die ganze Woche hier, Leute.
Jonah: Wenn Matt und ich zusammenkommen, sind die “Flachwitze” oft außer Kontrolle!
HF: Habt ihr die Absicht, We Are Sentinels live auf die Bühne zu bringen und wenn ja, gibt es Ideen für eine mögliche visuelle Umsetzung?
Jonah: Nächstes Wochenende haben wir hier in St. Paul, Minnesota, eine Aufwärm-Show. Ich habe einige größere Ideen bis hin zu einigen Live-Orchester Parts und vielleicht einem Chor, aber im Moment sind bestehen unsere Live-Shows nur aus uns beiden. Je größer wir werden, desto mehr können wir davon umsetzen.
Matt: Große Show=Großes Geld. Zu tun, was wir gerne tun würden, wird einiges kosten. Daran müssen wir arbeiten. Hoffentlich mögen die Leute unsere Sachen, und wir können genug Geld machen, um diese Art von Show auf die Bühne zu bringen.
HF: Matt, wann können wir dich wieder auf einer Metallplatte hören? Und Jonah, gibt es schon Pläne für ein weiteres Pyramaze-Album?
Jonah: Pyramaze haben in der Tat bereits ein paar Sachen für eine weitere Platte geschrieben. Meine andere Band, in der ich tätig bin, heißt Teramaze und wird zuvor ein Album auf Mascot Label Group veröffentlichen. Ich denke, dass es die Prog-Metal-Welt verändern wird.
Matt: Ein neues Ashes of Ares Album wird in diesem Jahr erscheinen. Es ist ja schon eine Weile her seit unserer letzten Scheibe, und Freddie und ich sind wirklich froh, dass die Leute da draußen das neue Album zu hören bekommen. Wir haben ein neues Label (Rock of Angels) und es geht bergauf! METAL!!

Hellfire‘s Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.
This time we talked to Jonah Weingarten (Pyramaze) and Matt Barlow (ex-Iced Eaerth) about their latest project “We Are Sentinels”.
HF: Matt sang the Pyramaze album “Immortal” a few years ago. How did you rejoin forces and found “We Are Sentinels”? Did you already have the idea to record another album together one day?
Jonah: Actually this is the tenth anniversary of “Immortal” so it’s been more than just a few years. Matt and I reconnected when he joined Pyramaze on stage for a few songs during Prog Power USA 2016. We performed a special set there that included songs from our entire career. Matt and I have always had loads of musical chemistry and I think we both knew it was time to create something new and special. With We Are Sentinels, it was actually Matt’s idea to do something not “metal” but more outside of the box.
Matt: Yep, it’s all my fault that it’s not a metal record! Haha! It really just seemed like something that needed to be done…something we needed to do…I think we nailed it!
HF: “We Are Sentinels” awakens reminiscences of film compositions of various fantasy stripes, you won’t find rock or metal elements here. Was the album planned like this from the beginning or did it only emerge in the course of the songwriting? And what is the concept behind it?
Jonah: I think any elements of metal that people do find comes from some of the vocals or maybe the intensity of some of the harder hitting epic parts. The only plan that we really had from the start was that Matt and I were going to do an album that was only keyboards/piano and vocals. From there the sky is really the limit. My biggest musical influences come from film score music so I think it’s pretty natural that this is the end result.
Matt: I really dig the high drama of cinematic scores. I love that I have been able to “give a voice” to that genre of music. It was really fun!
HF: With this kind of music you could imagine several different voices. Jonah, did you have Matt in mind from the beginning as the – only – singer of “We Are Sentinels” or were there possibly other singers that you were thinking off?
Jonah: It’s always just been Matt since this only exists from a series of discussions that Matt and I had back towards the end of 2016. I can’t imagine doing this with anyone but Matt.
Matt: Did he just call me “A butt matt”? I’m here all week, folks!
Jonah: When Matt and I get together the “dad jokes” are often out of control!
HF: Do you have plans to bring We Are Sentinels live on stage and if so, do you have any ideas for visual implementation?
Jonah: We actually have a warm up show next here in St. Paul, Minnesota next weekend. I have some larger scale ideas as far as incorporating some live orchestral pieces and maybe a choir down the road, but for now our live shows will just be the two of us. The larger we grow the more we can do.Matt: Big show=Big money. To do what we would like to do, will cost quite a bit. We’ll have to work up to that. Hopefully the folks dig our stuff, and we can make enough dough to bring that kind of show.
HF: Matt, when can we hear you on a metal record again? And Jonah, are there already plans for another Pyramaze album?
Jonah: Pyramaze has been doing some writing for another record in fact. My other band that I’m in called Teramaze will have an album out before that though for sure on Mascot Label Group. I think it will be a game changer in the prog metal world.
Matt: A new Ashes of Ares record will be out this year. It’s been a while now, and Freddie and I are really glad to be getting this out there for the folks to hear. We got a new label (Rock of Angels) and things are looking up! METAL!
