Wacken 2025: Mittwoch 30.07.2025, Tag 1

Keine Ahnung, was seinen Auftritt verhindert hat. Sehr schade.

Wacken Open Air 2025 will go down in the annals of metal history as one of the rainiest years in the north of Germany. Heavy rainfall alternating with sun, blue skies, clouds and tolerable country rain.
As in previous years, the organization was great; where storms did come in, any “shortcomings” that occurred were rectified promptly and effectively.
We quickly got used to the rainy weather. On the first day it was still annoying, but by the second day people were shrugging their shoulders indifferently.

My personal results: I walked 80.8 km in Wacken, walked 111724 steps, took about 13000 photos (I have to check the exact number) and unfortunately “only” photographed 67 bands. The heavy rain and mud made it impossible to take photos again and again. It felt like bathtubs full of water were being poured over us at times. We didn’t want to put the cameras through that. Despite everything, some of our colleagues‘ cameras, lenses and batteries “died”.

On Wednesday, the first official WOA day, I got into the action with the Metal Battle winner from Germany, Gun Called Britney, and was impressed by both the music and the stage acting. To be the first band on the W.E.T Stage and to immediately set the alarm was a great performance. You should definitely keep an eye on these guys from Hamburg.

For the next band, I just had to walk 100 meters to the right to the Headbangers Stage, where the next winners of the Metal Battle were introduced: Killotine from Canada seamlessly followed on from the outstanding presentation of their predecessors, and delivered an energetic thrash set. This is another band to keep on your radar; although not winners of this year’s Metal Battle, the Canadians are definitely a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Dogma then played on the furthest stage, the Louder Stage. At their concerts, the female band demonstrates against religion and for sexual liberation in lascivious nun costumes. The band’s music is traditional heavy metal.
I’m generally always on the lookout for bands that stand out visually at their shows, regardless of the music. This comes second for me. With Dogma, both were right for me: an extraordinary show paired with great music.

After Dogma I went back to the Headbangers Stage for the next concert of the Metal Battles. It was the turn of Hellmidian from Mexico and to the astonishment of many, there were a lot of Mexican fans in front of the stage, enthusiastically waving the Mexican flag.
Hellmidian have been around since 2012, but apart from many demos and two split albums, the band have only released one EP.
13 years of making music at the grassroots level has paid off, because the guys presented an experienced, down-to-earth set with their speed metal. Great!

Theophobos from Guatemala are this year’s local Metal Battle winners. Unfortunately – as the name says: W:E:T Stage – it was raining again during their gig. To make matters worse, the stage was totally covered in fog (for the first three songs), so my pictures are anything but acceptable. The fog was so thick that I almost missed the keyboard player at the edge of the stage. The band appeared, except for one guitarist, with masks that were simply too colorful to fit the band’s death metal. Nevertheless, the set was well received by the audience.

Next on my list was Voodoo Kiss from Baden-Württemberg, who were playing on the Wackinger Stage. The rain had been heavy so far, but the heavens opened the floodgates even more, so that even I was now worried about my cameras and the rest of my equipment. It felt like bathtubs of water were pouring down on us. I would have liked to see the band for longer, but if I wanted to make sure I could take photos until the end of the WOA, the cameras had to go into the (already extremely fenced) backpack. Sorry guys, we’ll definitely make up for that in another place.

Still in the pouring rain, I made my way from the Wackinger to the Wasteland Stage, where the American thrashers Warbringer reduced the stage to rubble. The rain let up briefly before it poured down all the harder on the audience (and the photographers in the pit). Although I didn’t last very long in front of the stage, Warbringer left a lasting and extremely good impression on me. The pictures clearly show why.
At this point I would like to express some criticism: of course, rules are not made for nothing and everyone gets annoyed here and there when they get caught. However, in the case of the head of security at the Wasteland stage, I and many of my photo colleagues were really annoyed! Instead of keeping us on the left side of the stage in the pouring rain, which was always free and only ten meters away from the paved path towards the press area, the guy who “saluted” us from above insisted that we always had to make our way through the extremely high mud through the entire audience to the other side of the stage. Sliding, stumbling and exposed to the heavy rain with cameras worth of small cars. And then, after the three songs, exactly the same way back through the crowd. For us, with our sensitive equipment, a NO GO, so that the Warbringer concert was to be the first and last on the Wastland Stage, and not just for me. Some flexibility should be guaranteed (not a problem with any other stage, by the way). Too bad for the bands.

Lita Ford, the grande dame of hard rock, began her career in 1975 with the Runaways. I had the pleasure of seeing her as part of the Rock Meets Classic tour and was excited to see how she and her band would perform in Wacken. The Louder Stage was the perfect setting for Lita, and her set was absolutely remarkable. Surrounded by a great band and with her musical connection to Ozzy Osbourne (If I Close My Eyes Forever), she was one of the highlights of this year’s WOA. It was an impressive show that brought tears to the eyes of many.

In 2022, Wind Rose still played on the Wackinger Stage. This year, they made it to the Faster Stage, and deservedly so. As the support act for big crowd pullers such as Powerwolf, they were able to present themselves to a much larger audience in the past than if they had been headlining clubs and smaller venues. They did everything right.
And so the Italians drew a large crowd to the infield, who enthusiastically joined in.

The local Metal Battle winners from Spain are called Radity. Founded in 2023, the quartet swept across the stage like a storm. Their stage acting was astonishingly polished, as if the band had been playing together for decades. The band reminds me of Destruction and Tankard in their early days. Unrestrained and wild! Fantastic! We will definitely be hearing a lot more from Radity.

Next up, alongside the W:E:T Stage, Necrosin from Bahrain took to the Headbangers Stage. The trio had won the Metal Battle there and were now ready to do battle in Wacken. The band’s death metal was a little too edgy for my taste, and as a trio, it wasn’t easy for the guys to make the most of the stage. But the maniacs in front of the stage obviously really enjoyed the set, and that’s what matters most.

The Finns from Apocalyptica then stirred up the crowd on the Faster Stage with a Metallica set. It’s amazing what three cellos and a drum kit can do. The band always manages to strike a balance between classical and metal, perfectly catering to fans of both genres.

I was excited about the announced set by Tarja & Marco Hietala on the Louder Stage. Both formerly with Nightwish, both no longer with the band. However, Marco and Tarja complemented each other excellently in their vocals at the time and brought some real gems to the stage. Most of the photographers standing with me in the pit probably felt the same way. It was strange that the backdrop featured only Tarja’s name. And so, not only those of us in the pit, but also many in the audience waited in vain for Marco to appear. I have no idea what prevented him from performing. It’s a real shame.

The heavens opened once again as I made my way from one Finnish act (Tarja) to the next, namely Lost Society at the W:E:T Stage (where else?).
Lost Society offer exactly the rough musical counterpart to Tarja’s polished sound. Thrash with lots of movement on stage. An interesting set, which for me personally had more highlights on the visual than the musical side.

The example of Nestor clearly shows how little influence one has on the tastes of record companies. In the case of the Swedes, no one was interested in the band in the 1980s/1990s, so in 1995 they threw in the towel in frustration and turned their backs on music.
In 2021, however, the guys got the itch again, so they offered their “old” material to the music industry once more. And lo and behold, with a delay of around 30 years, it suddenly took off and Nestor are now enjoying the success that, in my opinion, they deserved back in the 1980s. Better late than never…
On the Headbangers Stage, the guys now (once again) cleaned up under the Wacken banner and delivered 100%. The people in the audience who didn’t know the band before were immediately convinced and went wild.
It’s just a shame that it was still pouring with rain, so I was slowly starting to worry about my cameras. I wanted to see Skynd and Ozzyfied afterwards, but because of the terrible weather, I had to end my first day at WOA with Nestor.
