Vor einem Jahr konnte man mich noch mit allem jagen, was irgendwie das Wort “Core” beinhaltete. Seitdem ist viel geschehen und ich stöbere mich begeistert durch die internationale Szene, um immer wieder auf neue und großartige Bands aufmerksam zu werden. Meine neueste Entdeckung kommt aus Orlando, Florida und nennt sich The Knowing Within.
Die vier Jungs spielen seit 2014 als Band zusammen und haben sich seither stetig im positiven Sinne weiterentwickelt. 2015 haben sie das erste Mal die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeit tontechnisch festgehalten und die EP “Believe To See” veröffentlicht. Mit dieser im Gepäck haben sie sich auf diversen Touren auch einen guten Live Ruf erspielt. Zu Beginn diesen Jahres haben The Knowing Within nun endlich neues Material veröffentlicht.
“Circumstances” enthält fünf Full-Tracks und drei abwechslungsreiche Interludes. Das kurze, passend betitelte “Introduction” lässt die EP auf einem härteren Ton starten, als ihn die anschließende erste Single “Erase My Misery” vermittelt, die gerade im Chorus durch ein etwas pop-punkiges Drum-Motiv und die passenden Gitarrenriffs eine gewisse Leichtigkeit im Sound erhält. Entsprechend dominieren die cleanen Vocals im Gesamtbild und die Shouts werden akzentuiert eingesetzt, bis sie in der zweiten Hälfte des Songs für kurze Zeit das Kommando übernehmen und dem Track zusammen mit den passenden Rhythmussalven eine gute Portion Härte verpassen.
Die geplante zweite Single “No Dogs Allowed” hat gehörig mehr Bad Ass Charme. Der Song treibt unwiderstehlich voran, die Vocals gewinnen deutlich an Intensität und unweigerlich lässt man sich auf den Beat der Rhythmusinstrumente ein. “Respite” als anschließendes Interlude irritiert dann etwas, weil es eigentlich eine reine Trancenummer ist. Infolgedessen erhält das Album hier eine Art Zweiteilung und das folgende “Prologue” schubst die ganze Sache in eine riffbetontere Gangart, die auf die weniger glattgeschliffene Klangweise des Titeltracks “Circumstances” vorbereitet. Hier besticht vor allem der wechselnde Gesang, der weiche mit rauen Cleans und Shouts kombiniert.
“A Feeling Profound” bringt als Visitenkarte ein Feature von AJ Bartholomew mit. Als wenn das schon nicht genug wäre, kombiniert der Track eingängige Melodie mit aggressiven Parts und treibt den Puls in die Höhe. Definitiv einer der härtesten und beeindruckendes Songs auf “Circumstances”. Das abschließende “I’ll Find A Way” hingegen zeigt The Knowing Within von einer komplett anderen Seite, geht es hier doch in einer Mischung aus Alternative und Post Hardcore schon fast balladenhaft zu. Nach den manchmal aufwühlenden vorherigen Songs ein schöner und entspannter Ausklang der EP, der mit seiner minimalistischen Instrumentierung den Gesang in den Vordergrund stellt, bis im letzten Drittel insbesondere die Drums die Intensität des Songs noch erhöhen.
The Knowing Within sind der Tipp für alle, die Metalcore lieben, der einen nicht durch seine Soundwucht erdrückt. Hier kommen Melodien und toller Gesang zu ihrem Recht und ergeben eine Zusammenstellung von Songs, die zum Mitsingen einladen und einfach viel Spaß beim Hören garantieren.

One year ago, you could have chased me away with everything that somehow included the word “Core”. Since then, a lot has happened and I am thrilled by the international scene and always searching for new and great bands. My latest discovery comes from Orlando, Florida and is called The Knowing Within.
The four members have been playing together as a band since 2014, and have since developed steadily in a positive way. In 2015, for the first time, they recorded the results of their work and released the EP “Believe To See”. With this in their luggage, they have earned a good live reputation on various tours. At the beginning of this year, The Knowing Within have finally released new material.
“Circumstances” contains five full tracks and three varied interludes. The short, aptly titled “Introduction” lets the EP start on a harder note than the subsequent first single “Erase My Misery” conveys, which gets a certain ease in sound through a kind of pop punk drum theme and the appropriate guitar riffs in the chorus. Accordingly, the clean vocals dominate in the overall picture and the shouts are used accentuated until they take over in the second half of the song for a short time and give the track a good deal of hardness together with the hard driving rhythm section.
“No Dogs Allowed”, planned as the second single, has a lot more bad ass charm to offer. The song drives the listener irresistibly forward, the vocals are clearly gaining in intensity and inevitably you let yourself fall into the beat of the rhythm instruments. “Respite”, the subsequent interlude, is somehow irritating due to it being a kind of trance song. This results in a kind of division of the album and the following “Prologue” pushes the whole thing in a direction that puts more emphasize on the guitar riff and prepares for the less smooth sound of the title track “Circumstances”. The most striking part of the song being the change in vocals, the soft combining with rough cleans and shouts.
“A Feeling Profound” brings a guest appearance of AJ Bartholomew as a business card. As if that wasn’t enough, the track combines catchy melody with aggressive parts and lets your heart beat faster. Definitely one of the hardest and most impressive songs on “Circumstances”. The final “I’ll Find A Way”, on the other hand, shows The Knowing Within from a completely different side, with a mixture of alternative and post hardcore in an almost balladlike way. It puts a nice and relaxed ending to the EP, with its minimalistic instrumentation underlining the vocals, until the drums in particular increase the intensity of the song in the last third of it.
The Knowing Within are the tip for those who love Metalcore that does not overwhelm you with its pure raw power. Here melodies and great vocals are in their rightful position and make a compilation of songs that invite you to sing along and just have fun listening.
