Since I’ve started working for Hellfire magazine, I’ve discovered a lot of bands for me, but only a few have fascinated me as much as the American formation Softspoken. Again and again I came back to the single “Begin Again” and again and again the band philosophy fascinated me. The fact that the quartet from Kentucky also makes generally simply great music, probably needs no separate mention.

The perfect post-hardcore sound of the band benefits from the band members’ many years of experience in other bands and results from the different musical backgrounds, influences and approaches of the individual. Founded in 2016 by Chris Wethington, the band name is based on the fact that he is more inclined to the quiet tones. Instead of bowing to the dictates of the popular, Softspoken’s stated goal is to make exactly the kind of music that the band is confident in and that can convey a positive message. They are well aware that the message and emotion of each song represents something unique to each listener.

The upcoming album expands the 2017 released EP “Pathways” by six more songs that had not made it to the original EP due to various reasons, be it for cost reasons or because they were stylistically different from the pieces of the EP. However, since all of them were written in the “Pathways” phase of the band, the Deluxe Edition now forms an ideal conclusion to this first, successful chapter of the band’s history and presents the listener with further facets of the members of Softspoken.

The first five tracks correspond to the original EP, with the opener “Wanderer”, which, after a dissonant start with guitar feedbacks and the like, transforms into a fast post-hardcore number that is emotionally charged by the vocals of Sam Scheuer. “I Feel Fire”, on the other hand, is more rhythmic and thus more powerful and striking, but in between explores the whole range from heavy to filigree in the melody line not only through the contrast between clean vocals and shouts. The partially ballad-like “Close To Me”, accompanied by orchestral elements, completes the original EP and is also found as a live recording on the album, as well as “Something I’m Missing”.

The new songs of this release are partly of very personal nature. The beautiful ballad “Grow” was written by guitarist Chris Wethington for his little son Alec and almost single-handedly recorded. Stylistically inspired by soothing children’s songs, the song contains the thoughts and feelings of the softspoken founder surrounding the birth of his son. Wonderfully dreamy, you want to listen to this sung declaration of love again and again. But the subsequent “Unheard”, originally released as a B-side, with its rather atonal opening immediately kicks you from the clouds without warning and presents you with the hardest track on the entire album that puts the emphasis on a very hardcore-like sound . Shouts on the edge of growling, sometimes performed in the tempo of chanting, and the well considered use of clean vocals form one facet of the intensity of this song. But the instrumentation of this song puts off any restraint and creates a huge sound that impresses as well.

If you like post-hardcore and similar music, you just have to listen to Softspoken. I honestly wonder why no big record company has ever grabbed this gem. If you want to know what I am talking about, you should listen to the above mentioned “Begin Again” (see link below). After this compelling first chapter in their band’s story, I hope that Softspoken will soon create a similarly exciting second chapter.
