Mit dem Hellfire Quick5 Interview versuchen wir für unsere Leser möglichst interessante Infos aus den Musikern rauszukitzeln, ohne dass sie sich seitenlangen Fragen/Antworten hingeben müssen. Wir vom Hellfire bemühen uns dabei, (mehr oder weniger) kurz und prägnant im Rahmen von 5 Fragen zu agieren (manchmal kann eine Frage auch gedoppelt oder getrippelt sein); den Musikern obliegt es, nach ihrem Gutdünken zu antworten: kurz und knapp bis hin zu ausschweifend und umfangreich.
Diesmal sprachen wir mit den Jungs von Scarfold aus Montreal, die am 04. April 2019 ihr neues Album “Unstoppable” veröffentlichen.
HF: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu eurem neuen Album. Ich weiß, ihr arbeitet schon daran, euch eine Fan-Base in Europa aufzubauen, aber seid doch bitte so nett und stellt Scarfold als Band, ihre Mitglieder und ihren musikalischen Stil für unsere Leser vor, die euch noch nicht kennen.
Scarfold: Vielen Dank. Wir sind Scarfold aus Montreal, Kanada. JS Roy an der Gitarre, Martin Gendreau am Schlagzeug, X am Bass und Fab Franco am Mikro. Wir spielen geradlinigen, pissed off Hardcore, wenn man das als Stil klassifizieren kann, haha!
HF: Apropos europäische Fan-Base, ich war überrascht, dass ihr letztes Jahr schon durch Europa getourt seid. Das ist für eine noch junge Band aus Kanada doch eher ungewöhnlich, oder? Wie kam es dazu? Was wusstet ihr über die europäische Hardcore Szene und wie deckungsgleich waren dann Erwartungen und Realität?
Scarfold: Ja, das kann man wahrscheinlich so sagen, dass es eher unüblich ist für Bands, die noch nicht so lange dabei sind, aber wir wussten von Anfang an, dass wir gerne unterwegs sind, es hat sich einfach richtig angefühlt. Nachdem wir in unserer Provinz und in Ontario, Kanada Shows gespielt hatten, bekamen wir einige Angebote, in den USA zu spielen, aber das wurde immer komplizierter und schwieriger, je öfter wir da unten gespielt haben. Wir wollten mehr Shows spielen, also haben wir beschlossen, im DIY-Style eine Tour in Europa auf die Beine zu stellen…und so verrückt es auch klingt, dass war wesentlich einfacher als eine Tour in unserem Nachbarland. Wir hatten gehört, dass die europäische Hardcore Szene eng zusammensteht und jeder, der Teil davon ist, unglaubliches Engagement zeigt, aber die Realität hat dann alle Erwartungen noch übertroffen, denn wir hatten dieses hohe Level an Support und Liebe zum Hardcore von allen Beteiligten nicht erwartet. Man fühlt sich ganz demütig und gleichzeitig ist es ein wunderschönes Gefühl.
HF: Scheint auf jeden Fall eine Erfahrung gewesen zu sein, die nach Wiederholung schreit, denn im Mai kommt ihr wieder nach Europa. Was sind so die lessons learned vom letzten Mal und auf was freut ihr euch am meisten? Vielleicht spezielle Shows oder Bands, mit denen ihr die Bühne teilen werdet?
Scarfold: Eine großartige Erfahrung und wir freuen uns, wiederzukommen. Wir haben gelernt, auf unsere Körper zu hören, wenn sie uns etwas mitteilen. Z.B. das sie Schlaf brauchen und wir es nicht bis zum Äußersten treiben sollten und dann am Ende möglicherweise einen höheren Preis zu zahlen haben. Wir haben festgestellt, dass Adrenalin nur eine gewisse Zeit anhalten kann. Eine Sache, auf die wir uns immer am meisten freuen, ist es, etwas Neues zu entdecken, dass einfach unglaublich fantastisch ist…egal, ob es eine Band ist, die wir noch nicht kannten oder Essen, das wir noch nie probiert haben. Das Gulasch in Tschechien…Hammer… Grüße gehen raus an unsere Freunde, mit denen wir Bühne und Moshpit teilen werden, wie unter anderem Forgotten Chapter und End Of Nothing. Selfish Hate und Unbeaten werden wir zum ersten Mal treffen, aber wir sind Riesenfans.
HF: Ihr bringt euer neues Album mit auf die Tour. Welche der neuen Songs spielt ihr am liebsten live und warum? Welche werden eurer Einschätzung nach wahrscheinlich die Fan-Lieblinge auf diesem Album?
Scarfold: Ehrlich gesagt lieben wir sie alle, sorry für das Klischee. Als Kollektiv “Unstoppable”, “By Any Means” und “Far Gone”, denn diese Songs wühlen die Zuhörer auf – und das lieben wir. Aber wir sind uns nicht wirklich sicher, was die Lieblingssongs der Fans werden könnten. Für uns hat dieses Album mehr ein konzeptionelles Thema und besteht nicht einfach nur aus unterschiedlichen, einzelnen Songs…alles kommt zusammen, um dann eine chaotische Umgebung in jedem Moshpits zu schaffen, auf den das Album trifft… nochmal sorry für das Klischee, aber unserer Meinung nach ist jeder der Songs großartig. Alle sind Zutaten im Rezept zur Erschaffung einer Hölle, also lass uns schauen, wann wir den Kampf zum Zuhörer tragen.
HF: Einer meiner persönlichen Favoriten ist “By Any Means”. Wenn ich mich nicht irre, habt ihr da einen Feature-Gast oder von wem stammen die zusätzlichen Vocals? Warum habt ihr ausgerechnet diesen Song für ein Feature ausgewählt?
Scarfold: Stimmt, dass ist JP von den großartigen Get The Shot. Wir sind Fans von GTS, aber die Jungs in der Band sind auch aufrechte Kerle, gute Leute und Freunde von uns. Wir hatten das Gefühl, der Song könnte noch eine zusätzlich Portion Wut vertragen, beigesteuert von der bedrohlichen, einschneidenen Stimme von JP. Das war einfach ein Bauchgefühl, ihn bei diesem Song für ein Feature einzuladen.

Hellfire Quick 5 interviews try to gather a lot of interesting information within the narrow frame of five questions and five answers. Sometimes a query may be divided into two or three partial questions. It’s up to the musicians to answer short, longer or excessively.
Today we talk to Hardcore band Scarfold from Montreal who will release their debut album „Unstoppable“ on April 4, 2019.
HF: Congratulations on your new album. I know you are already working on building a European fanbase, but for those of our readers who don’t know you yet, be so kind to introduce Scarfold as a band, its members and its musical style.
Scarfold: Thank you. We are Scarfold from Montreal, Canada. JS Roy on guitars, Martin Gendreau on drums, X on bass, and Fab Franco on vocals. We play straight up pissed off hardcore, if that can be classified as a style, haha!
HF: Talking about European fanbase, I was surprised to learn that you’ve been touring Europe last year. Seems quite unusual for a band from Canada that is just a few years old, isn’t it? How did this come to pass? What did you know about the European Hardcore Scene? And how did reality meet up to expectations?
Scarfold: I guess you can say that, it is not common for bands that haven’t been around a long time, but we knew from the beginning that we loved being on the road, it just felt right. After playing around in our own province and Ontario, Canada, we got some offers to play in the U.S. but that became extremely complicated and difficult, the more we went down there. We wanted to play more so we decided to create a tour, DIY style, in Europe…and as crazy as it sounds it was actually less complicated than our neighbouring country. We heard that the European HC scene is very solid with incredible dedication from everyone who is part of it, the reality of it all exceeded all expectations because we did not expect to see to that high level of support and love for HC from everyone involved. It was humbling and beautiful.
HF: Seems definitely been an experience that’s worth repeating cause in May you’ll be back in Europe. What are the lessons learned from last time you’ve been over here and what are you looking forward to the most? Maybe any special shows or bands to share a stage with?
Scarfold: Amazing experience, and we’re excited to be back. We learned that we gotta listen to our bodies when they’re trying to tell us something. Like sleep when we have to, instead of pushing it to the max and possibly paying a higher price in the end. We discovered adrenaline can only last so long. One thing we always look forward to the most is discovering something new that is just incredibly awesome…whether it be a band we never heard before or food we never tasted. The Goulash in Czech Republic… killer, by the way. We wanna give a huge shout out to our friends, among others, we can’t wait to share the stage and mosh pit with, like Forgotten Chapter and End Of Nothing. We’ll be meeting Selfish Hate and Unbeaten for the first time, but we are big fans!!
HF: You’ll bring your new album with you on tour. Which of the new songs do you enjoy most playing live and why? Which one do you expect to become the fan favourite of this album?
Scarfold: To be honest we love them all, pardon the cliché. Collectively, “Unstoppable”, “By Any Means” and “Far Gone”, because it gets listeners all riled up…and we love that! But really, we’re not sure which can be a fan favorite. We feel this album has more of a conceptual theme, than just different individual songs…all coming together for the purpose to initiate a chaotic environment in every mosh pit it hits… again, pardon the cliché, but we feel they are all awesome! Ingredients in a recipe for hell, so I guess we will see when we bring the war to the listener.
HF: One of my personal favourites is „By Any Means “. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems you have a feature guest on this song or whose are the extra vocals? Why did you choose this song for a feature?
Scarfold: We do, it is JP from the killers, Get The Shot. We are fans of GTS, but the guys in the band are also stand up dudes, good people, and friends of ours. In the song, we felt we could add a nice touch of added anger from JP s menacing piercing pitch. It was really an instinct to invite him on this tune.
