Young, talented, self-confident and endowed with a sense of humor – a combination that makes a lot of hope for the future and also makes a strong impression at the first step of the way. Jet Fuel Chemistry have managed to make me look outside the box and to discover great music outside of my usual genres.

The five Irishmen have met in the native music scene of Dublin and discovered so many common likes and vices that it was enough for founding a band. This wasn’t too long ago and still these guys manage to deliver a high-class debut with their self-titled EP. And even though they tend to a basic tone of rock, they mix a lot of different influences into this, which give their sound an unique touch.

Powerful guitar riffs set some punchy metal moments, while few, slightly hinted prog finger exercises provide examples of the filigree skills of the instrumentalists. In between, it ranges from the hearty garage sound to the intoxicating, melodic-laden alternative that instantly gets stuck into your ear. The whole thing is crowned by the distinctive voice of frontman Dan Cusack, who can follow the melodic lines with ease and full of emotion in both the powerful and the gentle moments.

Jet Fuel Chemistry have the ability to create a harmonious sound from individual style elements that is captivating and exciting. The opener “Flinch” starts with a powerful guitar riff, which forms a dense sound structure to which the vocals oppose a looser part in the verses, and then come together in the chorus to create an impressive full sound. The extensive guitar solo gives the song a melodic momentum and completes it in its entirety.

The new single “Karma”, on the other hand, is a song that strikes on first listening and whose chorus you will not get rid off any time soon. The change between driving and rather solemn, but always highly melodious parts lifts the mood and makes you want to see the boys live on stage. Such songs have what it takes to become a timeless classic. “Dust” then raises the degree of hardness back up and with some riffs puts a good dose of metal into the song recipe and even dares in the second half of the track to insert a few small experiments.

In “Phantom” there is rock of the barely polished kind, which shows another facet of the guys from Dublin. The edges are only smoothed out so far that the rougher sound glides into the ear in a heartfelt unpolished way. “Way Back Home”, on the other hand, brings back pleasant memories of the great times of alternative rock and “Raised By Wolves” dismisses the listener from the debut EP of Jet Fuel Chemistry with a rhythm-laden sound full of classic rock elements, before you feel the irrisistble need to hit the play button to start all over again.

If you like multi-faceted rock with a great amount of power in it, you should not miss out on these Irish newcomers. A band that on its debut so confidently and skillfully conjures up six varied songs full of character without the use of any distracting gimmicks, makes me curious, how they will surpass themselves on their first release in album length. I’m pretty sure they will at least stay at the level of this EP and I plan on keeping an eye on Jet Fuel Chemistry from now on for sure.
