Die Thrash Legenden WARBRINGER sind wieder bereit unsere Häuser niederzubrennen. Nach 5 langen Jahren, erblickte ihr neuestes Album „Wrath & Ruin“ (https://www.hellfire-magazin.de/warbringer-wrath-ruin/) am 14.03.2025 das Licht der Welt. Was können wir erwarten und wie geht es weiter im WARBRINGER Universum? Unser Stefan hatte das Vergnügen sich mit Sänger John Kevill zu unterhalten und ihm ein paar Fragen zu stellen:

HM: Hallo John. Danke das du dir die Zeit genommen hast. Wie geht es dir? Bevor wir über euer neues Album sprechen, lass uns über eure musikalischen Einflüsse reden. Was waren die Haupteinflüsse für die Bandmitglieder von WARBRINGER?
John: Bei den Mitgliedern gibt es eine ziemlich große Bandbreite an Sachen, auf die sie stehen… aber für die Band ist der Kern der aggressive Thrash und im Grunde der klassische Kanon des Heavy Metal. Für mich sind das vor allem Kreator, Slayer, Demolition Hammer, Sodom, usw. Aber die Band lehnt sich auch stark an melodischen oder Black Metal an.
HM: Gibt es bestimmte Ereignisse, die die Band dorthin gebracht haben, wo sie heute ist?
John: Im Grunde genommen hat die ganze Erfahrung, eine Band zu sein, zu touren, Platten zu machen und seit fast 20 Jahren zu versuchen, immer weiter voranzukommen, uns dahin gebracht, wo wir jetzt sind. Es geht immer darum, den nächsten Schritt zu machen und zu versuchen, eine bessere Metalband zu sein.
HM: Lass uns also über die Entstehung des neuen Albums sprechen. Wann habt ihr angefangen, Ideen für das Album zu sammeln?
John: Etwa zu der Zeit, als wir 2023 tatsächlich mit „Weapons of Tomorrow“ auf Tournee gehen konnten, begann ich, mir einige der Songs auszudenken. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte ich bereits einen Großteil der Texte für „The Sword and the Cross“ und „A Better World“ geschrieben und auch einige der anderen Titel und Ideen im Kopf. Dies bildete das zentrale Konzept für die weitere Arbeit an der Platte.
HM: Was kann man erwarten? Und was ist die Geschichte hinter „Wrath & Ruin“?
John: Es gibt keine „Geschichte“ zu dem Album an sich, aber es gibt übergreifende Themen wie Klassenmacht und technologische Dystopie.
HM: Ihr bedient euch immer auch bei anderen Genres oder seid nah dran. Nachdem ich die Platte gehört hatte, hatte ich das Gefühl ihr hört euch düsterer an. Wie kam es dazu? Ist es ein Prozess der kontinuierlichen Weiterentwicklung?
John: Ich denke, das hatten wir schon immer, da wir selbst auf extremen Metal stehen und es ganz natürlich ist, dass uns das beeinflusst. Ich denke auch, dass die Musik der Band im Allgemeinen bösartig, düster und unerbittlich ist, also scheint es eine natürliche und gute Ergänzung für uns zu sein.
HM: Ihr seid gerade in Europa als Support Act unterwegs. Z.b. mit euren Idolen von KREATOR. Das hört sich nach einem Killer Paket an. Gibt es Pläne vielleicht noch zum Jahresende hin eine Headliner Tour in Europa zu starten?
John: Wir haben eine Headliner-Tour in den USA gemacht und werden im Sommer einige Headliner-Termine haben. Derzeit gibt es keine Pläne für eine komplette Headliner-Tour, aber ich würde es nicht ausschließen.
HM: Thema Konzerte. Ein Ereignis, das viele Metal-Fans hier in Deutschland beschäftigt. Viele Konzerte werden Aufgrund von schlechten Vorverkäufen und anderen Ereignissen abgesagt. Das führt sogar dazu, dass ganze Touren abgesagt werden. Denkst du, dass es ein lokales Problem ist? Wie ist die Situation in den Staaten?
John: Ich denke, dass Konzerte als Geschäftsmodell viele Probleme haben. Die Menschen werden allgemein in verschiedenen Ländern unter finanziellen Druck gesetzt, und das führt zu weniger Einkommen, und somit zu weniger Zeit für Konzerte. Ebenso machen die steigenden Preise die Durchführung einer Tournee teurer als je zuvor. Das ist überall ein Problem, soweit ich das beurteilen kann. Was soll man da machen?
HM: Was sind eure Pläne für die nähere Zukunft?
John: Weitere Touren für dieses Album und so viel wie möglich Köpfe zum „bangen“ zu bringen.

After long 5 years full of hope and tension their new Album „Wraith & Ruin“ (https://www.hellfire-magazin.de/warbringer-wrath-ruin/) finally arrived. What can you expect and what happens next in the WARBRINGER universe. Our own Stefan has the chance to ask Singer John Kevill some questions:
HM: Hello John. Thanks for your time. How are you doing? Before we talk about your new Album let´s talk about your musical influences. What are the main influences for the members of WARBRINGER?
John: Across the members there’s a pretty wide variety of stuff they are into… but for the band, the core stuff is the aggressive thrash and basically the classic canon of heavy metal. A few main ones for me- Kreator, Slayer, Demolition Hammer, Sodom, etc. But there is a lot of leaning into more melodic or black metal stuff in the band’s work.
HM: Are there any specific events that drives the band to the position where it is today?
John: Basically the whole experience of being a band, touring, making records, and always trying to push forward for almost 20 years created where we are now. It’s always about just taking the next step and trying to be a better metal band.
HM: So let´s talk about the creation of the new Album. When do you start to collect ideas for the record?
John: Around the time we were actually able to tour “Weapons of Tomorrow” in 2023. I was beginning to come up with some of the songs here. I had written much of the lyric for “The Sword and the Cross” and “A Better World” by that point and had some of the other titles and ideas floating too. This formed the central concept for the record moving forward.
HM: What can we expect and what is the story behind „Wraith & Ruin“?
John: There isn’t a “story” to the record per se, but there are overarching themes of class power and technological dystopia.
HM: You´re always up to other genres or close to it. After hearing the record I thought you´re more into darker Notes. How did this come about? Is it a process of the ongoing development?
John: I think we have always had this, since we are into extreme metal ourselves and it is natural for that to influence us. I also think the band’s music is generally vicious, dark, and unrelenting, so it seems a natural and good fit for us.
HM: You´re on Tour in Europe as support Acts. For example with your heroes KREATOR. That sounds like a Killer package. Are there any Plans to do a european headlining Tour at the end of the year?
John: We did one in the USA recently, and are doing some headline dates this summer. No plans for a full headline tour currently but I wouldn’t rule it out.
HM: About concerts. An event that engaged many Metal Fans here in Germany. Many shows have been canceled due to bad pre-sales and other events. It even leads to cancel whole tours. Do you think it is a local problem? How is the situation in the states?
John: I think concerts as a business are having many problems. People are generally getting squeezed in several different countries, and this leads to less disposable income, so less time out at concerts. Likewise, rising prices of everything make conducting a tour more expensive than ever before. It’s a problem everywhere as far as I can tell. What can you do?
HM: What are your plans for the near future?
John: Tour this record and bang as many heads as possible!
