Vor kurzem haben wir euch das neue Album “Antares” der englischen Melodic / Symphonic Metal Band ANGEL NATION vorgestellt (Review HIER), welches am 08.April veröffentlicht wird. Grund genug um Sängerin Elina Siirala (ES), die neben ANGEL NATION auch seit ein paar Jahren bei Leaves’ Eyes vorm Mikro steht, einmal über dessen Entstehungsgeschichte und andere Dinge zu plaudern…
HF: Zunächst mal Gratulation zum gelungenen neuen Album. “Antares” ist in der sehr schwierigen Zeit der Pandemie entstanden. Inwiefern hatte das einen Einfluss auf den Entstehungsprozess? War es nur einfach nur ein ärgerliches Hindernis, das es zu überwinden galt, oder konntet ihr dem Ganzen vielleicht sogar etwas Positives abgewinnen?
ES: Dankeschön! Ich habe eigentlich schon 2019 mit dem Schreibprozess begonnen. Ich hatte einige große Veränderungen in meinem Leben und eine lange Periode, in der ich mich nicht inspiriert fühlte, Musik zu schreiben, deshalb hat es so lange gedauert, bis das Album endlich fertig war. Man kann die Entwicklung während der drei Jahre hören, den Enthusiasmus, die Höhen und Tiefen und ja…auch die Pandemie! Aber das war kein so großes Hindernis, denn wir konnten trotzdem aufnehmen. Es war eher die Ungewissheit über die Zukunft, die diese Zeit sehr unangenehm machte.
HF: In der Promo heißt es, das Album sei inspiriert von einem Konzept über eine Armee von Engeln. Kannst Du uns die Idee dahinter etwas näher erläutern?
ES: Nachdem ich endlich meine Inspiration zurückgewonnen und das Gefühl hatte, aus dem Winterschlaf zu erwachen, hatte ich ein sehr starkes visuelles Bild im Kopf. Es war diese Armee von Engeln (Seraphim), die für mich das Feuer, die Leidenschaft und die Ausdauer repräsentierte, die ich gerade erlebte. Ich war sehr motiviert und aufgeregt, wieder neue Musik zu machen. Man kann diesen Einfluss besonders auf „Seraph“, „We are fire“ und „Where the future lies“ hören.
HF: Wie würdest du selbst die Entwicklung von eurem Vorgänger-Album “Aeon” zu “Antares” beschreiben, sowohl in musikalischer Hinsicht als auch mit Blick auf die Band an sich?
ES: Dieses Album ist genauso vielseitig wie „Aeon“, da ich gerne mit verschiedenen Stilen experimentiere, und meine Liebe zum 80er Jahre Rock ist natürlich immer zu hören. Aber „Antares“ ist härter ausgefallen und da ich es über einen so langen Zeitraum geschrieben habe, hat es für mich auch viel Tiefe. Es ist wie eine Reise, eine Geschichte, die in den Texten das Fiktive mit der Realität verbindet.
Musikalisch ist der größte Unterschied, dass George die Gitarren geschrieben hat. Ich denke, er hat die Essenz von AngelNation eingefangen, aber natürlich auch etwas Neues in den Mix eingebracht. Wir hatten auch das Vergnügen, dass Alexander Krull dieses Album abgemischt und gemastert hat, was dem Album auch den sehr schweren und satten Sound gab.
HF: Du bist hauptverantwortlich für das Schreiben der Songs. Inwieweit hat der Rest der Band ein Mitspracherecht? Diskutiert ihr die Themen/Texte für ein Album gemeinsam oder hast Du das alleinige Sagen?
ES: Ich habe immer mit dem Klavier komponiert also schreibe ich normalerweise den Song, die Keys und die Synthies und vielleicht ein paar sehr einfache Ideen für Gitarre und Schlagzeug. Aber ich schicke die Songs gerne so unverfälscht wie möglich an die Band, damit sie ihre eigenen Ideen einbringen kann. Manchmal ändern wir dann ein paar Details, Strukturen, Akkorde usw. Aber die lyrischen Themen waren schon immer meine Sache.
HF: Es gibt viele Bands die über einen ähnlichen Sound verfügen wie ihr. Für die die euch noch nicht kennen, warum sollten sich Rock/Metal Fans ausgerechnet eurer Band zuwenden? Was hebt euch Deiner Meinung nach von den anderen Bands ab bzw. macht euch einzigartig?
ES: Als ich die Band gegründet habe, war das für mich ein Ventil, um die Art von Musik zu schreiben, die ich für meine Stimme liebe. Manchmal sind die Songs eher metallastig, manchmal eher hardrockig, manchmal sogar gothiclastig und manchmal sind sie eher keyboard- und synthielastig. Ich liebe auch epische Balladen, und ich finde, dass all diese Komponenten zusammen mit meiner Stimme einen einzigartigen Sound ergeben. Alles in allem ist es etwas, das ich wirklich liebe: Einprägsame Melodien, musikalische Vielfalt, echte Texte. Wenn das die Fans erreicht und anspricht, dann freue ich mich, dass sie meine Leidenschaft teilen!
HF: Welchen eurer Songs würdest Du als eine Art Signature-Song auswählen und warum?
ES: Das wäre auf jeden Fall “Last time together”, da es der Song war, mit dem die Band gegründet wurde und der viele Menschen berührt hat.
HF: Die Band wurde 2011 noch unter dem Namen “EnkElination” gegründet. Warum habt ihr diesen vor ein paar Jahren geändert?
ES: Es war eine sehr schwierige Entscheidung, aber es hatte sich herausgestellt, dass die Leute den Bandnamen nicht verstehen, aussprechen oder sich merken konnten. Das war nicht gut, um die Band bekannt zu machen, also beschlossen wir, den Namen ins Englische zu übersetzen (Enkeli bedeutet Engel auf Finnisch).
HF: Es ist ja heutzutage durchaus üblich, einen Song eines anderen Künstlers zu covern. Welche(r) Song(s) würde(n) Dich reizen einmal mit ANGEL NATION einzuspielen?
ES: Ich würde gerne eine Version von “It’s all coming back to me now” von Meat Loaf aufnehmen. Ich singe dieses Lied oft zum Spaß. Wir haben auch ein paar Mal “The evil that men do” live gespielt, was viel Spaß gemacht hat!
HF: Jeder Musiker hat ja meistens irgendwelche Idole/Favoriten, mit denen er gerne mal zusammenarbeiten würde. Wer wäre das für Dich?
ES: Es gibt eine Menge toller Künstler, mit denen ich gerne zusammenarbeiten würde! Wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, liebe ich den Sound der 80er Jahre, also wäre es ein Traum, mit Paul Stanley von Kiss oder Eric Adams von Manowar zu arbeiten. Ich habe bereits mit Noora von Battle Beast gesungen, und ich würde in Zukunft definitiv gerne mehr mit ihr zusammenarbeiten.
HF: Wenn du zurückblickst, was waren die bisher wichtigsten Stationen eurer Band-Geschichte, und was möchtet ihr noch erreichen, bevor ihr euch irgendwann einmal zur Ruhe setzt?
ES: Es ist eine Menge Arbeit, eine Band von Grund auf hochzuziehen, und ich hatte das Glück, dass mir einige unglaubliche Leute auf meinem Weg geholfen haben! Ohne diese Leute würde ich heute nicht hier sein! Ich denke, dass jedes Album ein Meilenstein war und ich fühle mich sehr glücklich, die Unterstützung der Fans zu haben, die „Antares“ möglich gemacht haben! Ich glaube nicht, dass ich etwas Bestimmtes erreichen muss, aber ich hoffe, dass ich noch lange weiter komponieren, singen und auftreten kann!
HF: Es kann natürlich kein Interview geben, ohne dich irgendwie auf Leaves’ Eyes anzusprechen. Auch wenn dir natürlich beide Bands am Herzen liegen, welche von beiden hat für Dich oberste Priorität?
ES: Ich setze meine Prioritäten bei beiden Bands so, wie es gerade nötig ist. Natürlich bin ich mit Leaves’ Eyes viel Beschäftigter, was die Tourneen angeht, aber es bleibt immer Zeit für beide Bands. Es erfordert nur Planung und Zeiteinteilung. AngelNation ist natürlich eine Band, die ich gegründet habe, und ich schreibe hauptsächlich die Musik und die Texte, also ist meine Rolle eine andere. Aber bei Leaves’ Eyes darf ich die Rolle des Geschichtenerzählers übernehmen, in diese Sagen eintauchen und es erinnert mich ein wenig an die Zeiten, in denen ich Opern auf der Bühne aufgeführt habe. Beide Rollen sind gleichermaßen aufregend und ich liebe es, all diese unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen zu machen, neue Dinge auszuprobieren und mich als Künstlerin weiterzuentwickeln.
HF: Vorausgesetzt, die Welt gerät nicht weiter in Schieflage, wie sind denn eure Pläne für die kommenden Monate?
ES: Wir haben am 13. Mai eine Release-Show in London, auf die ich mich sehr freue! Weitergehende Pläne werden gemacht und das Songwriting geht auch weiter!

Recently we presented you the new album “Antares” of the English melodic / symphonic metal band ANGEL NATION, which will be released on April 8th. Reason enough for singer Elina Siirala (ES), who besides ANGEL NATION has also been singing with Leaves’ Eyes for a few years, to chat about its creation and other things…
HF: First of all, congratulations on the successful new album. “Antares” was written during the very difficult time of the pandemic. To what extent did that have an influence on the creation process? Was it just an annoying obstacle that had to be overcome or could you maybe even find something positive in it?
ES: Thank you! I actually started the writing process already in 2019. I had some big changes in my life and had a long period where I didn’t feel inspired to write music, so that’s why it took a long time to finally get this album done. You can hear the development during the three years, the enthusiasm, the ups and downs and yes…also the pandemic! But it wasn’t such a big obstacle since we were still able to record. It was more about the uncertainty of the future that made it very unpleasant time.
HF: In the promo it says that the album was inspired by a concept of an army of angels. Can you explain the idea behind it a bit more?
ES: As I finally gained my inspiration back and felt like I was waking up from this hibernation, I had a very strong visual image in my mind. It was this army of angels (Seraphim) and for me it represented the fire, the passion the persevierence I was experiencing. I was very motivated and excited to be creating new music again. You can hear this influenece especially on Seraph, We are fire and Where the future lies.
HF: How would you describe the development from your previous album “Aeon” to “Antares”, both musically and in terms of the band itself?
ES: This album has the same broad variety as Aeon as I love to experiment with different styles and my love for 80’s rock can always be heard for sure. But Antares is heavier and since I wrote it over such a long period of time, it also has a lot of depth for me. It’s like journey, a story that combines the fictive and reality in terms of lyrics.
Musically the biggest difference was that George was writing the guitars. I think he captured the essence of AngelNation but also brought of course something new into the mix. We also had the pleasure to have Alexander Krull mixing and mastering this album which gave it also the very heavy and rich sound.
HF: You are mainly responsible for writing the songs. To what extent does the rest of the band have a say? Do you discuss the themes/lyrics for an album together or do you have the sole say?
ES: I’ve always written with piano, so I usually write the song, the keys and synths and maybe some very simple guitar and drum ideas. But I like to send the songs as bare as possible to the band and then they can put their own ideas there. We sometimes end up changing some details, structures, chords etc. But the lyrical themes have always been up to me.
HF: There are many bands that have a similar sound to yours. For those who don’t know you yet, why should rock/metal fans turn to your band? What do you think sets you apart from the other bands or makes you unique?
ES: When I started the band it was an outlet for me to write the kind of music I love for my voice. Sometimes the songs have more metal emphasis, sometimes more hard rock, sometimes even gothic and sometimes they are more keyboard and synth driven. I also live epic ballads and I find that all these combinations together with my voice create a unique sound. All in all it’s something I genuinely love: Catchy melodies, musical variety, genuine lyrics. If that reaches and speaks to the fans, then I’m happy they share my passion!
HF: Which of your songs would you choose as a kind of signature song and why?
ES: That would defnitely be “Last time together” as it was the song that started the band and has touched a lot of people.
HF: The band was founded in 2011 under the name “EnkElination”. Why did you change it a few years ago?
ES: It was a very diffuclt decision but it had become apparent that people couldn’t understand, pronounce or remember the band name. It wasn’t good for trying to get the band out there, so we decided to change it into the English translation (Enkeli is angel in Finnish)
HF: It’s quite common nowadays to cover a song by another artist. Which song(s) would you like to record with ANGEL NATION?
ES: I would love to do a version of “It’s all coming back to me now” by Meat Loaf. I often sing that song for fun. We also played “The evil that men do” live a few times which was great fun!
HF: Every musician usually has some idols/favourites with whom he would like to collaborate. Who would that be for you?
ES: There are a lot of great artists I would love to collaborate with! As I mentioned, I love the 80’s sound so for example Paul Stanley from Kiss or Eric Adams from Manowar would be a dream to work with. I already got to sing with Noora from Battle Beast, but I would definitely love to collaborate with her more in the future.
HF: Looking back, what have been the most important stages in your band’s history so far, and what do you still want to achieve before you retire at some point?
ES: It takes a lot of work to start a band from the scratch and I’ve been blessed to have some incredible people helping me on the way! Without these people I wouldn’t be here today! I think every album has been a milestone and I feel very lucky to have the support from the fans who made Antares possible! I don’t think I have any specific thing I need to achieve, but I hope I can continue to create, sing and perform for a long time!
HF: Of course, there can’t be an interview without somehow mentioning Leaves’ Eyes. Even though both bands are close to your heart, which one has the highest priority for you?
ES: I prioritise both bands according what’s needed at that time. Of course I’m much busier with Leaves’ Eyes in terms of playing tours, but there’s always time for both bands. It just requires planning and scheduling. AngelNation is of course a band I grounded and I mainly write the music and lyrics, so my role is different. But in Leaves’ Eyes I get to take the role of a story teller, dive into these sagas and it reminds me a bit of the times I was perorming operas on stage. Both roles are equally thrilling and I love having all these diffreent experiences, trying new things and developing myself as an artist.
HF: Assuming the world doesn’t get further out of kilter, what are your plans for the coming months?
ES: We have a release show coming up in London 13th May which I’m very much looking forward to! Other plans are being made and the songwriting is also continuing!
