Es gibt seltsamere Methoden als Instagram, um neue Lieblingsbands zu entdecken. Oder etwa nicht? Wie auch immer, so bin ich jedenfalls über Break And Enter gestolpert und war sofort süchtig nach ihrem Song “Sticks And Stones”. Diese fünfköpfige Melodic Hardcore Band aus Nashville weiß definitiv, wie man einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt.
Ursprünglich als Quartett angetreten, veröffentlichten Break And Enter im November 2015 ihre Debüt-EP “Welcome Home”. Zu Beginn des folgenden Jahres wurde Ashley Briggs Mitglied der Band und machte sie somit zu einer der wenigen Hardcore Bands mit einer Frau an Bord. In der Folgezeit musste die Formation ein paar Besetzungswechsel verkraften, aber mit der Veröffentlichung von “The Call Of The Void” setzen Break And Enter ein beeindruckendes Ausrufezeichen. Diese Band muss man kennen(lernen), wenn man sich auch nur im geringsten für Hardcore interessiert.
“Welcome Home” war ja schon ganz nett, aber mit der Rückkehr ins Studio und zu Trevor Hoffort (Owls In The Attic) als Produzent, hat die Formation aus Nashville das nächste Level erreicht. Und direkt die guten Kontakte zu ihren Musikerkollegen aus Nashville nutzend, bieten Break And Enter bei “Sticks And Stones” den Elmyra-Frontmann Stephen Loveland als Gastsänger auf, was dem Song im Vergleich zum Rest des Albums zwar einen größeren Metalcore-Touch verleiht, ihn aber keineswegs weniger intensiv macht. Und intensiv ist hier das passende Wort, um “The Call Of The Void” perfekt zu beschreiben. Der Albumtitel bringt es dabei auf den Punkt.
“The Call Of The Void” (dt.:Der Ruf der Leere), auf Französisch “L’Appel Du Vide”, beschreibt die Reaktion des Gehirns auf eine Situation, die eine extreme Adrenalinausschüttung hervorruft. Und dieses Album ist definitiv eine solche Situation, denn schon das kurze Intro “L’Appel Du Vide” ist die ideale Visitenkarte für die nachfolgenden zehn Songs. Wuchtiger Sound von Anfang an, eine Bassline die einen ordentlich in den Hintern tritt und aggressive Shouts, die das Herz auf Hochtouren schlagen lassen. Gleiches gilt für den Titeltrack “The Call Of The Void”. Nach einem kurzen eingängigen Gitarrenriff zu Beginn, haut dieser nach 20 Sekunden so richtig rein und zieht dies über die volle Spielzeit durch. Weiteres Highlight des Albums ist ein Gastauftritt von Ben Mueller, Frontmann von Owls In The Attic.
Nachdem ich “The Call Of The Void” jetzt unzählige Male gehört habe, kann ich immer noch keinen Lieblingstrack benennen. Jeder Track ist auf seine Art großartig. Aber wer Break And Enter von ihrer aggressivsten und intensivsten Seite kennenlernen möchte, sollte sich “The Reaper” gönnen.
Break And Enter servieren feinsten Hardcore mit einer melodischen Metalcore-Beilage. Wer es ausprobiert, wird es definitiv nicht bereuen.

There are stranger ways than Instagram to discover new favorite bands. Aren’t there? Anyway, that’s how I stumbled across Break And Enter and instantly got hooked up on their song “Sticks And Stones”. This five-piece melodic hardcore band from Nashville sure knows how to make a lasting impression.
Break And Enter originally startet out as a quartet and released their debut EP “Welcome Home” in November 2015. At the beginning of the following year, Ashley Briggs joined their ranks, making them one of a few hardcore bands featuring a female member. Later on they had to cope with some line-up changes but with the release of “The Call Of The Void”, Break And Enter set an impressive exclamation mark. This is a band you need to (get to) know if you’re into hardcore (if only ever so slightly).
“Welcome Home” was kind of nice, but with the return to the studio and to Trevor Hoffort (Owls In The Attic) as a producer, the Nashville based formation put themselves to the next level. Using their good contacts to their fellow musicians from Nashville, Break And Enter are featuring Elmyra vocalist Stephen Loveland on “Sticks And Stones”, giving it more of a metalcore touch than most of the rest of the album but not making it less intense in any way. Intense being the word to describe “The Call Of The Void” perfectly. And the album title is bringing it to the point.
“The Call Of The Void” means the way your brain controls an intense adrenaline inducing situation. The French expression being “L’Appel Du Vide”. And this album sure is such a situation, the short intro “L’Appel Du Vide” being the perfect business card for the ten songs to come. A powerful sound right from the start, a bass line that’s kickin’ ass and aggressive shouts making your heart bump even faster. The same applies for the title track “The Call Of The Void”. Opening with a short catchy guitar riff, this one kicks hard after 20 seconds and doesn’t stop ’til the end. Another album highlight is the appearance of Ben Mueller, lead singer of Owls In The Attic, on guest vocals.
Even after listening to it a zillion times, I’m not able to name a favorite track, ’cause they are all awesome in their own way. But if you want to get to know the most aggressive and intense aspect of Break And Enter, you should give “The Reaper” a try.
Break and Enter serve finest hardcore with a melodic side of metalcore. You won’t regret giving it a try.
